December 5, 2005 -- The Mets weren't comfortable trading Aaron Heilman for Tampa Bay catcher Toby Hall. And they didn't want to engage in bidding wars for free-agent backstops Bengie Molina or Ramon Hernandez this week.
Yet they are apparently willing to trade their top minor-league pitching prospect on a catcher who turns 34 in April.

Though the team was not ready to announce the trade last night, indications were Florida catcher Paul Lo Duca would be headed to the Mets for minor-league righty Gaby Hernandez and a player to be named.

A MLB official noted the Mets were still having dialogue and the deal could still fall apart, but another official said the trade was settled contingent on physicals.

Gaby Hernandez, 19, was recently rated as the Mets' third-best prospect, according to industry bible Baseball America.

The Mets have now traded three of their top four prospects, as righty Yusmeiro Petit (BA's No. 2 ranked prospect) and first baseman Mike Jacobs (BA's No. 4) were shipped to Florida in the Carlos Delgado deal.

Outfielder Lastings Milledge, their No. 1 prospect, is "highly unlikely" to be traded, one team source recently said. However, if GM Omar Minaya completes his quest to land Manny Ramirez this week, Boston will almost certainly want Milledge as part of the package.

---The Mets traded their best picthing prospect to save 1 (maybe 2) million a year for a 34 yr old catcher. Molina (30) and Hernandez (29) could have been had for 7-8 million a year while LoDuca makes 6.25 mil over the next 2 yrs. Again I must ask why Omar?

Bergen Record:

While the Mets may have saved slightly in payroll - getting Lo Duca, who will earn $6.25 million in each of the next two seasons rather than the deals that the free agents were expected to get - they did have to reach into their farm system again.

To get Lo Duca, who hit .283 with six home runs and 57 RBI last season, the Mets surrendered Hernandez, another of their promising prospects. In the deal for Delgado the Mets gave up pitcher Yusmeiro Petit and first baseman Mike Jacobs.

Hernandez, a 19-year-old right-hander, went 6-1 with a 2.43 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 922/3 innings at Hagerstown, then was just 2-5 with a 5.74 ERA with the St. Lucie Mets.

Also, Hernandez has thrown a no-hitter in his minor-league career.

Found this excerpt from the Star Ledger:

The Arizona Diamondbacks had been interested in acquiring Lo Duca, but a trade between the D-backs and the Marlins fell through last week. It's possible, but not likely, that Minaya might turn around and send Lo Duca to Arizona as part of a package for Javier Vazquez and then sign either Hernandez or Molina.

-If Omar spins off LoDuca to the D-Backs thats the only way this deal is justified. He could've signed one of the 2 YOUNGER free agent catchers, who are at least equal to LoDuca. Age can creep up with catchers pretty fast, so why not take one of the younger guys and keep the farm intact?

LoDuca is only decent with the bat now. He really only had two very good years but is very good defensively and is a excellent clubhouse guy. It wouldn't suprise me if he is a future manager.

New York and Boston are expected to talk this week about Manny Ramirez, and it wouldn't be surprising if the Mets dealt disappointing Kaz Matsui, perhaps choosing to replace him at second with a free agent such as Mark Grudzielanek.

I will be honest with you...Kaz Matsui is one of the worst baseball players i have ever seen.He was suppose to be a big time shortstop over in Japan or wherever he came from and he could not even reach 1st base on a fly.So he was switched to 2nd base where he was just as bad.If they can get Mark Grudzielanek that would be very nice.He is a very steady player.

1st base...Delgado
2nd base...Grudzielanek
3rd base...Wright
SS...Reyes
Catcher...LoDuca

That is a very nice infield..

Also have heard/read of Benson to the Royals for relievers Jeremy Affeldt and Mike Mcdougal...I like that deal b/c it helps the middle relief big time and the Mets have a surplus of starters

Benson heading to K.C.
Dec 6 - The Mets are about to trade right-handed starter Kris Benson to the Royals for left-hander Jeremy Affeldt and right-hander Mike MacDougal, reports ESPN's Peter Gammons, who says the deal could get done Tuesday night.
Earlier, the Newark Star-Ledger reported that Mets GM Omar Minaya had spoken with several teams about Benson -- including Baltimore, San Francisco and Kansas City.

The Mets like Benson but would move him in order to clear his salary ($15.5M over two years) so they could make a deal for a high-priced starter such as Arizona's Javier Vazquez or Oakland's Barry Zito.

New York almost dealt Benson to Baltimore last week for Jorge Julio. But the Mets went back to the Orioles demanding a high-level prospect in addition to Julio, and the O's balked

Lets say they get zito and get rid of Benson

Pedro
Zito
Glavine :flush:
Trachsel :flush:
Seo :flush:

That is not an impressive starting rotation.Glavine is about done in my opinion,he dont win anymore.Everybody loves Trachsel i honestly cant stand the guy.Jay Seo..please

The A's have given the Mets permission to negotiate a deal which leads me to believe a trade has been agreed upon in principal.

The rotation after a potential Benson deal, and the trade for Zito would be more like this:
Pedro
Zito
Glavine
Trachsel
Zambrano

Dont be surprised if Seo goes in the deal back to Oakland

Piazza's Mets days are over as arbitration is declinedAssociated Press

DALLAS -- Mike Piazza's days with the New York Mets are over.

The Mets declined Wednesday to offer salary arbitration to their longtime catcher, cutting ties with one of the best hitters in franchise history. The move was no surprise, and now the 12-time All-Star is likely to join an American League team that can use him as a designated hitter.

The Los Angeles Angels, Minnesota Twins and Toronto Blue Jays are among the clubs that could be interested.

"One of the greatest offensive forces that the Mets have ever had," general manager Omar Minaya said at baseball's winter meetings. "He's just been a special player that will probably go down in history as, without a doubt, one of the greatest hitting catchers in baseball."

New York refused to offer arbitration to any of its former players who became free agents, including former closer Braden Looper.

The team has offered a contract to 41-year-old reliever Roberto Hernandez and was waiting to hear back from his agents. But if Hernandez and the Mets didn't agree to a deal by the midnight EST deadline Wednesday, he also will not return.

Players who became free agents and weren't offered arbitration cannot re-sign with their former clubs until May 1. Those offered arbitration have until Dec. 19 to accept and can re-sign through Jan. 8.

With the 37-year-old Piazza slowed by injuries the past three years, his production at the plate has declined dramatically. Plus, he has long had trouble throwing.

He became a free agent after last season, when he hit .251 with 19 homers and 62 RBI in 113 games. It was his lowest batting average since he hit .232 in 69 at-bats with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1992, his first season in the big leagues.

Piazza was acquired in a trade with Florida in May 1998, eight days after he was shipped from the Dodgers to the Marlins in a blockbuster deal that also included Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla, Charles Johnson and Todd Zeile.

Piazza led the Mets to the 2000 World Series, which they lost to the crosstown rival Yankees, and became the career home run leader for catchers.

"Mike Piazza's been a great player, a great teammate, a great citizen," Minaya said. "At the time when we got him, I was an assistant general manager. I've been very fortunate to watch Mike Piazza, and we're going to miss Mike Piazza being a New York Met."

The Mets have been one of the busiest teams in baseball this offseason, adding first baseman Carlos Delgado, All-Star closer Billy Wagner, catcher Paul Lo Duca and utilityman Xavier Nady.

Looper spent two seasons as the Mets' closer, going 4-7 with a 3.94 ERA and 28 saves in 36 chances this year.

Hernandez did a nice job as a setup man last season, when he was 8-6 with a 2.58 ERA and four saves in 67 games.

What is the Mets deal with Vazquez? They are trying to move Benson who's owed 15 million over two years, so they can get Vazquez (who has already shown he can't cut it in NY) and he's due 24 million the next 2 years??? I understand the interest in Zito (see CY), but this Vazquez propoganda is a bad move for Omar.

This re-affirms that the trade for LoDuca was a waste...

Orioles have four-year, $27.25M deal with C HernandezESPN.com news services
The Baltimore Orioles and catcher Ramon Hernandez reached a preliminary agreement on a $27.25 million, four-year contract.
Hernandez hit .290 with 12 home runs and 58 RBI with the San Diego Padres in 2005. The Orioles' 2005 catcher Javy Lopez hit .278 with 15 home runs and 59 RBI.

The deal is subject to a physical and probably won't be finalized until next week.

Mets only saved 500-600k on payroll with LoDuca when compared to this deal the YOUNGER (and probably better) Hernandeza just signed with the Os. The Mets also gave up their best pitching prospect to get him.
