Isn't this shit getting a little out of hand? Jesus Christ!

Jennifer Aniston has come under fire for using the word "retard" during an interview.

On Live with Regis and Kelly Thursday, the Switch star, 41, was discussing dressing up as Barbra Streisand for the September issue of Harper's Bazaar when she let the word slip.

"You're playing dress up!" Regis told her. She replied, "Yes, I play dress up! I do it for a living, like a retard!"

Peter Berns, CEO of The Arc (a nonprofit advocate for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities), tells UsMagazine.com it was "extraordinarily offensive and inappropriate."

"Frankly, someone in her position ought to know better," he tells Us. "She is using language that is offensive to a large segment of the population in this country. We estimate that there are probably in excess of 5 million people in the country with intellectual disabilities, and when you think about all of them, their family members and friends, you're talking about tens of millions of people who find the use of that term to be really offensive. Every time folks hear that word, it kind of reminds them of all the discrimination and oppression they've experienced in their lives. Even if it wasn't intended to insult them, that is the effect of it."

Other celebs have been scolded for using the "R word," including Howard Stern and Lindsay Lohan.

"Sadly, people use the word pervasively even if they don't realize it," Kirsten Seckler, spokeswoman for the Special Olympics, tells Us. "People with intellectual disabilities have fought their whole lives for understanding and recognition. When people continue to use the R word, it's hurtful."

Stars may want to use the word "ridiculous" instead, she says. "Think before you speak," Seckler advises, "especially when you're making fun of yourself or others."

Adds Seckler, "We have a very passionate group of people advocating for change in their communities and schools to change the use of this word."

I know I am in the minority here. Same as "fag", or "that's so gay", if you ask me. I will use it in the same way Anniston did, but not in "polite" company. With friends, sure. With clients, no chance.

Quite simply, I am not in the business of disrespecting good folks.

The Department of Mental Retardation was forced to change it's name to the Department of Developmental Services.

It depends on the context. You can even say "fuck" at the WSOP now depending on the context. You can't say, "you idiot fucking donkey" but you can say "nice fucking hand" :mj07:

I agree, Cie, in bidness you have to avoid saying anything that could offend.

Of course, I should too, even in my bidness, but fuck it :toast:

This is the gambling biz so get used to it :0008

Yeah - if what I say offends people, I apologize for offending them - but I don't apologize for who I am.

Retarded
Gay
Fag
Cunt Knob

they're in my vocabulary and all of them are used in a negative connotation. Except the last one.

Everyone has their own way, cunt knob:0008

I don't think it's so much the word itself, I think it's the connotation that annoys people. Nobody ever uses 'retard' in a positive light. You'll never hear, "Man, Tom Brady is ON FIRE today! He's slinging that pigskin around like a real retard!"

But I have to agree with the others, this is a term I use sometimes and don't really think twice about using. I think Cie nailed it, you probably shouldn't whip it out in business or amongst strangers.

Being mentally retarded is a unfortunate thing. That is why it is used in a bad context. Same thing as calling something a "cancer". I am sure cancer groups will eventually seize on that. Repurposing negative or unfortunate words is commong.

But for fuck sake, calling something gay is dumb! Cause being gay isn't a bad thing. It's full of awesomeness :0074

Agreed. I totally understand why people use it in a bad context, I'm just saying I can see why people who are retarded or know people who are retarded take offense to it. But I'm pretty far from being PC, so what do I know?

As for the gay comment, you're probably right. We need Biggaycapper to come in here and confirm that though. :SIB
