Saturday, the A's will recall River Cats starter Aaron Harang (3-2, 1.77 at Sacramento, 2-0, 1.08 at Double-A Midland) to pitch for injured Cory Lidle against Travis Harper (1-1, 2.81).

The 24-year-old right-hander was pulled after just two innings of his start on Tuesday for Triple-A Sacramento. Harang is 3-2 with a 1.77 ERA at Sacramento. He was 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA at Double-A Midland before he was promoted in mid-April.

Harang was one of the pitchers acquired from the Texas Rangers in the Randy Velarde trade in November 2000. He would be starting in the spot vacated when Cory Lidle went on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain. If all goes well with Lidle, the A's will need Harang for just one game.

Lidle is scheduled to pitch for Triple A Sacramento on Sunday in Oklahoma City, and then would be available to start next Friday or Saturday at Tampa Bay.

ANOTHER MOVE COMING: Howe confirmed that 6-foot-7 right-hander Aaron Harang,

who has gone 3-2 with a 1.77 ERA at Triple-A Sacramento, will make his first major-league start today against Tampa Bay.

That will necessitate a roster move, and there's some talk that Mike Magnante might be waived. The A's have been trying to clear their glut of left- handed relievers all season, and Magnante seems to be the most vulnerable of the three.

Mike Venafro has pitched the best among the lefty relievers, while Mike Holtz has another year left in his contract that would have to be paid off.

"Everybody assumes something's happening (today), so you just wait and see, " said Magnante, whose contract expires this year. "It's not worth worrying about it." MISCELLANY: Former Athletic Ben Grieve, who has just three hits in his past 35 at-bats, sat out his third straight game with a bruised thumb. .

. . The game was scheduled for 6:05 p.m., an hour earlier than usual, to accommodate the fireworks show that followed
