Wayne, can you give me the link to this speech, or maybe the paragraphs around that isolated quote - or was it a partial quote that you grabbed and left the rest out? I'm thinking when campaigning for President in '07 that he probably didn't single out and alienate the Christian population (he is a Christian, by the way, as you know) in the U.S. as you are trying to make people believe.

Is that the tact you are now going to take, jumping on board with the conspiracy theorists you rail on when others on a different side than you post simple name games? Just curious how far we're going these days - I think you know I give you more credit than some - although you have avoided a few of my questions lately. What I found interesting on his speech--after trying to distance himself as much as possible from muslim roots prior to election--all of a sudden before Muslim crowd he speaking of his roots-name and every association he can find.

Okay, so the context WAS important, along with the entire quote. As he explained the theme, he certainly did not just make that stand alone comment. The very next sentence gives us proper context - which you and other right wing attackers conveniently leave out for political purposes:

He went on to talk about the dangers of the religious right who hijack an entire party for their own political means (remember the separation of church and state, anyone?) and to talk of what this country is really all about, or should be.

Now, if you can find one of those "other" quotes or speeches that leaves the comment as a stand alone message, fine, otherwise, your post is misleading. That's why I asked - if you don't follow some of this stuff up, it becomes a talking point for certain individuals here (and elsewhere) that have trouble with more than a sentence or two of provided sound/print bites.

All this, of course, coming from a man who is a member of the Christian faith (except for those too ignorant or racially bigoted to admit it...) who has the vision and faith to challenge those who use his faith for political and financial gain, on the most public forum possible. Certainly different ways to look at this one - despite your efforts.

I do Tramp. Because I think it's important (as Chad mentioned) to have leaders who respect the principle of the seperation of church and state. Obama has reiterated his position on this in numerous speeches, including his inaugural address. Here's a recent video of Obama speaking to this point again while in Turkey...

Notice where Obama says... "I think what we're seeing in both countries (U.S. & Turkey) today is that promise of a secular country that is respectful of religious freedom, respectful of rule of law, respectful of freedom, upholding these values and being willing to stand up for them in the international stage."

Without the seperation of church and state, the agenda of the majority religion (by default) is merged with the agenda of the political majority and we no longer have freedom of religion. The irony is that evangelicals know this but they also know the majority religion (in the U.S.) is Christianity so they're willing to sacrifice freedom of religion to carry out their self-serving agenda.

The right is playing soundbite gotcha with the "Whatever we once were, we're no longer a Christian nation," part of Obama's statement. No doubt, many Christians do consider us a Christian nation and would understandably take offense to that soundbite. But the broader context of Obama's speech is an affirmation of his staunch belief in the Jeffersonian ideals represented in the Separation Clause of the 1st Amendment to the Constitution...

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

DTB's either playing the same gotcha game or he's unable to grasp the overall context of Obama's speech. In either case, I can't say that I'm surprised.

The gotcha game was invented for guys like DTB. He falls for it over and over again.
