Obama: Service to be a cornerstone of presidency
By JENNIFER LOVEN

Associated Press Writer

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ? Barack Obama
urged people Wednesday to look past the "bustle and busyness" of their everyday lives this Fourth of July weekend to find a way to help make the American dream real not just for themselves, but for all.

The call for service is part of a flag-draped week focused on God, country, veterans and freedom. They are larger-than-life themes, all prominent in the successful campaigns of President Bush and aimed at introducing Obama to Americans who know little about the presumed Democratic nominee ? or who may be skeptical based on what they've heard.

Before a boisterous University of Colorado crowd, Obama said the quiet following Friday's Independence Day celebrations would be a good time to consider how to contribute "to our most pressing national challenges," whether in the military, overseas or just next door.

"I hope that you take a moment to think about what you can do to shape a country we love, shape its future," Obama said. "Loving your country shouldn't just mean watching fireworks on the Fourth of July."

Obama talked in almost achingly intimate terms about the impact service had on him, as a boy who "spent much of my childhood adrift" and often had little idea "who I was or where I was going" because of his father's absence. But early in college, he said, values like hard work and empathy instilled by his mother and grandparents resurfaced "after a long hibernation." He eventually found himself working as a community organizer in a devastated South Side Chicago neighborhood, and said he was transformed.

Obama's call echoed Bush's "love a neighbor like you'd like to be loved yourself," an enduring staple of the president's political speeches of the last eight years. But Obama's campaign said the focus on service was meant not to recall Bush, but to reach back to President John F. Kennedy's generation-captivating "ask not what your country can do for you" inaugural address or President Clinton's creation of AmeriCorps.

To Obama, the problem is not that Americans are not willing to serve. It's that they have neither been asked aggressively enough nor given enough opportunities. In a clear slap to Bush, he decried that Americans eager to pitch in after the 2001 attacks were merely "asked to shop."

His solution is to promise repeated calls for American sacrifice as president and, to put teeth behind that, he has proposed a major expansion of government national service programs, first unveiled in Iowa in December, that would cost $3.5 billion a year. His campaign said he would fund this effort with savings from ending the war in Iraq and by canceling a new tax break for multinational corporations.

One new piece announced Wednesday would create a new "Green Vet Initiative" offering counseling, job placement and mediation with industry for veterans wanting to enter the rapidly expanding renewable energy field.

Other highlights include: increasing the all-volunteer military, expanding AmeriCorps, doubling the size of the Peace Corps, expanding service programs involving retired people, and creating a tax credit making the first $4,000 of college tuition free for students who conduct 100 hours of public service a year.

He avoided any criticism of Republican rival John McCain in the service speech, reserving that for much-applauded remarks he delivered by satellite to the United Steel Workers. Introduced by John Edwards, his former opponent for the Democratic nomination, Obama told the union's annual conference in Las Vegas that he respects McCain's accomplishments "even if he chooses to deny mine" but that the Arizona senator has little more to offer than a continuation of Bush's "tough luck, you're on your own" administration.

"We cannot afford to let John McCain serve out George Bush's third term," he said. "It's not change when John McCain decided to stand with George Bush ninety-five percent of the time."

Obama later paid a private visit to the U.S. Air Force Academy and Peterson Air Force Base and raised money for his campaign at a $1,000-per-person event at a luxury hotel.

On a fast ride from the academy to the hotel, a police officer in Obama's motorcade suffered minor injuries when his motorcycle crashed while blocking traffic for the entourage, the Secret Service said. Obama told the crowd of donors that he talked to the officer to convey his concern and was told "it's all part of the job."

"He is OK," Obama said. A campaign spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said the officer was released from the hospital.

As an unexpected entry in the battleground column for this November's election, Colorado is one of the chief places where Democrats see a chance to turn a reliably red state into a blue one.

In 2004, Democrat John Kerry made a play for the state but lost it 52 percent to 47 percent to Bush. But Obama chose it as one of the states where he is airing the opening television ads of his general election race. Its biggest city, Denver, was chosen to host the Democratic convention in August.

And Obama's choice of Colorado Springs, a home base for religiously oriented organizations and businesses, for his Colorado stop showed the degree to which he is courting Republican religious voters and trying to make McCain compete for their affections.

The visit brought Obama onto the turf of James Dobson, the popular and influential evangelical leader of Focus on the Family with whom Obama has sparred. A religious political action committee supporting Obama also has a new pro-Obama radio aid to highlight his fait
.............................................................

So while Obama is talking about service to your country and helping other Americans when you can.....

McCain is fending off reports he punched out a guy while attending a foreign meeting.

And not paying his property taxes for 4 years.

McCain is easily going to defeat himself .

GO OBAMA :00hour :00hour

On Iran, top military officer sounds like Obama
Joint Chiefs Chairman Mullen urges diplomacy, not use of force

WASHINGTON - It could turn out to be one of the most significant comments of the 2008 campaign ? but coming just ahead of a holiday weekend, it isn?t getting much notice.

Upon his return from a visit to Israel and Europe, the nation?s highest ranking military officer warned Wednesday that a military strike on Iran would be a very bad idea.

?This is a very unstable part of the world, and I don't need it to be more unstable,? said the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Michael Mullen.

He added pointedly, ?we haven't had much of a dialogue with the Iranians for a long time,? seeming to imply that the Bush administration should be talking to the Iranian government.

Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama has said that if elected, he would begin talks with Iran, without any precondition.

The Bush administration has insisted that before talks can begin, Iran must cease its nuclear enrichment ? a step toward building nuclear weapons.

Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain has said that his rival's willingness to hold direct talks, without preconditions, reveals "the depth of Sen. Obama's inexperience and reckless judgment.?

Adm. Mullen, much like Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, is one of those powerful unelected officials whose words could, at times, have as much effect on the campaign as Obama and McCain themselves.

It?s unusual for a military officer, especially the nation?s highest ranking one, to warn in such explicit terms of potential military action and to so emphatically call for diplomacy.

?What struck me about the comments was that he called for dialogue with Iran in his preliminary statement, even before he was responding to (reporters?) questions,? said Jon Alterman, the director of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Alterman pointed to Mullen?s opening statement in which he said, ?I'm convinced a solution still lies in using other elements of national power to change Iranian behavior, including diplomatic, financial and international pressure. There is a need for better clarity, even dialogue at some level.?

Not ruling out use of military force
President Bush, McCain, and Obama, all say they would not rule out the use of military force to prevent Iran from building nuclear weapons.

But Mullen appeared to be edging toward saying that military action, either by Israel or the United States, or both, would be catastrophic.

He also warned that the United States would be hard pressed to conduct operations against Iran, given the commitment of tens of thousands of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

?From the United States' perspective, the United States' military perspective, in particular, opening up a third front right now would be extremely stressful on us,? Mullen told reporters. ?That doesn't mean we don't have capacity or reserve, but that would really be very challenging.?

And, he added, ?The consequences of that (military action) sometimes are very difficult to predict.?

Mullen explained, ?Just about every move in that part of the world is a high-risk move. And that's why I think it's so important that the international piece, the financial piece, the diplomatic piece, the economic piece be brought to bear with a level of intensity that resolves this.?

The Israeli air force staged a large-scale drill last month that some observers saw as a warning of a possible Israeli attack on Iran.

But Mullen assured reporters Wednesday that ?the Israeli press reported fairly widely that?those exercises were planned and routine.?

In 1981, the Israeli air force destroyed the Osirak nuclear reactor in Iraq. The Israeli government believed Saddam Hussein's regime was planning to use the plant to make nuclear weapons in order to destroy Israel.

An attack on Iranian nuclear sites could cause the Iranian regime to attack shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world?s total daily oil demand is carried.

Oil prices hit a record high of nearly $146 a barrel on Thursday. As Americans drive during this July 4 vacation, one reason they're paying more than $4.50 a gallon in some parts of the country is the growing tension over Iran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said in an interview with The Associated Press Wednesday that the United States and Israel would not risk such an attack.

?The Israeli government is facing a political breakdown within itself and within the region, so we do not foresee such a possibility for that regime to resort to such craziness," Mottaki said. ?The United States, too, is not in a position where it can engage in, take another risk in the region.?

In Congress, some members have expressed their fear that the Bush administration might launch a unilateral attack on Iran.

But last year the House rejected, by a vote of 288 to 136, an amendment offered by Rep. Peter DeFazio, D- Ore., that would have prohibited funds being used to take military action against Iran without specific authorization from Congress ? unless Iran had first attacked the United States.

cCain makes second controversial Iran joke of the campaign
Posted: 10:00 AM ET

From CNN's Victoria Riess

McCain?s second Iran joke of the cycle is grabbing headlines.

(CNN) ? Presumptive Republican nominee John McCain is raising eyebrows for a joke about killing Iranians ? the second time the cycle a stab at humor involving the rogue nation has landed him in hot water.

At a Tuesday campaign event in Pennsylvania, a questioner referred to a recent survey that revealed cigarette exports to Iran rose significantly during the Bush administration. McCain replied jokingly, "Maybe that's a way of killing them."

After a few chuckles from those in attendance, he added "I meant that as a joke, as a person who hasn't had a cigarette in 28 years."

At a campaign event before the New Hampshire primary, the Arizona senator parodied the Beach Boys single ?Barbara Ann,? replacing the lyrics with the words "Bomb Iran."

Anyone that can see this dumb ass serving as President is off their rockers.

McCain just is pathetic.

If you dont know the basic right things to say, how the hell is he going to survive in Washington
without some serious help. Maybe Cheney will stick around and be his VP.

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran test-fired nine long- and medium-range missiles Wednesday during war games that officials said were intended to show the country can retaliate against any U.S. or Israeli attack, state television reported.

The test-firings were widely condemned in the United States, notably by the White House and the two main presidential candidates.

The exercise was being conducted at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which about 40 percent of the world's oil passes. Iran has threatened to shut down traffic in the strait if attacked.

Oil prices jumped on news of the missile tests, rising $1.80 to $137.84 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange by afternoon in Europe.

Gen. Hossein Salami, the air force commander of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, said the exercise would "demonstrate our resolve and might against enemies who in recent weeks have threatened Iran with harsh language," the TV report said.

Gates says Tehran is a threat
Footage showed at least six missiles firing simultaneously and said the barrage included a new version of the Shahab-3 missile, which officials have said has a range of 1,250 miles and is armed with a 1-ton conventional warhead.

That would put Israel, Turkey, the Arabian peninsula, Afghanistan and Pakistan within striking distance.

"Our hands are always on the trigger and our missiles are ready for launch," the official IRNA news agency quoted Salami as saying Wednesday.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the missile test bolsters the U.S. argument that Tehran is a threat. He also said it counters Russia's case against the need for a missile defense system in Europe.

The U.S. has argued for some time that there is a real threat Iran could develop long-range missiles to use against Europe, Gates said, and Tehran's launch of several missiles Wednesday helps make that point.

'Funny joke'
The report of the missile test came less than a day after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dismissed fears that Israel and the United States could be preparing to attack his country, calling the possibility a "funny joke."

"I assure you that there won't be any war in the future," Ahmadinejad told a news conference Tuesday during a visit to Malaysia for a summit of developing Muslim nations.

But even as Ahmadinejad and other Iranian officials have dismissed the possibility of attack, Tehran has stepped up its warnings of retaliation if the Americans ? or Israelis ? do launch military action, including threats to hit Israel and U.S. Gulf bases with missiles and stop oil traffic through the vital Gulf region.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called Wednesday's tests "evidence that the missile threat is not an imaginary one."

"Those who say that there is no Iranian missile threat against which we should build a missile defense system perhaps ought to talk to the Iranians about their claims," Rice said while traveling in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The Pentagon is studying Iran's latest missile test to figure out exactly what was launched and what it shows about Tehran's missile capabilities.

...............................................................

And another thing. Anyone that believes Iran is not building a nuke is just stupid.

Why do they need missles ?

N Korea did exactly the same thing , testing missles into the sea of japan.

Next step, we see a nuke test by Iran . Then its over. Just like N Korea. Then we got to start negotiating with them and giving them shit.

As soon as N Korea fired the first test missle , I would have sent a fake nuclear missle and landed it in their major city. Right down the pike. Let them fawkers know what they are getting into.

But thats the centrist barbarian in me .

Yeh McCain said there are 53 states in the Union if you include Iraq, Iran, and Columbia. And he wasnt kidding. The fawking Imperialist warmonger Bush sniffer.

Because McCain was tortured. which begs the question of why he hasn't come out for Gitmo to be closed. He has also changed his stance against torture. I'm sorry; I don't understand. As you have so aptly pointed out, he knows from personal experience that all torture does is produce false confessions. What's the point then ?

Speaking of family Scott--

how well do you (or anyone else)know your candidate.

Maybe you could answer a few simple questions for us voters--
- -lets start at the beginning

-What date were his parents married
-How long did they live together
-What date were they divorced
-Name his brothers and sisters--or you can just tell us how many--if that would be easier.

DOGS THAT BARK;2064280]Speaking of family

Scott--

how well do you (or anyone else)know your candidate.

Maybe you could answer a few simple questions for us voters--
- -lets start at the beginning

-What date were his parents married

On Feb. 2, 1961, several months after they met, Obama's parents got married in Maui, according to divorce records. It was a Thursday

-How long did they live together

Close to 3 years.

-What date were they divorced

Ann filed for divorce in Honolulu in January 1964, Obama Sr. signed for the papers in Cambridge, Mass., and did not contest the divorce.

-Name his brothers and sisters--or you can just tell us how many--if that would be easier.

Bill Clinton and Franklin Delano Roosevelt each had a half-brother. And Gerald Ford had six half-siblings through second marriages of his mother and father.

But Obama's immediate family is certainly one of the more complex in presidential history.

He has eight half-siblings -- seven of them living -- by four other marriages or relationships of his parents.

His father, Barack Obama Sr., had four children by a woman he married in Kenya before his 1960 marriage to Obama's mother in Hawaii. Two of those children -- son Abongo (Roy} and daughter Auma -- were born before Barack Obama Jr.

After Obama Sr. divorced Obama's mother, he married another American woman he brought to Kenya and had two more sons -- Mark and David, who was killed in a motorcycle accident. That marriage ended in divorce, after Obama Sr. resumed his relationship with his first wife.

The elder Obama had two other sons -- Abo and Bernard -- by his first wife, though Obama wrote in his memoirs that there is some question whether another man actually fathered Bernard.

Obama Sr. later had another son, George, by a woman he was involved with but apparently did not marry.

As for Obama's mother, the former Stanley Ann Dunham, she had a daughter, Maya Soetoro-Ng, from a second marriage to Lolo Soetoro

..............................................................

Wow that took me 10 minutes to look up. Not sure what your point would be. I am sure it is in some way trying to make Obama look bad for his family in some way. And we all know that your family is something you have no control over.
At least you didn't call him boy.

Can I ask you a few questions now about your candidate John McCain ?

Maybe you could answer a few simple questions about your candidate John McCain, to us voters.

1. When John McCain entered the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis he graduated in 1958.

What was his class ranking out of 899 fellow students ?

2. Did John McCain , while held captive in Vietnam, make a anti-American propaganda confession that was played over and over on Hanoi radio ?

What was the content of this confession ?

3. Explain the female black child in McCains present family.? Is this his biological child ?

4. At 72 McCain would be the oldest person in history to assume the presidency (at the time of initial election to office).

Who was the next oldest President and how old was he when he assumed the Presidency. ?
