What's the best time to water the lawn? I have always watered in the evening about a couple hours before dark. Somebody told me today, that's a bad time. WTF

morning...

you can get away w/evenings until it gets hot..hot and real humid..that is when the fungus and ugly shit begin to relish in lawns watered in the evenings

you are probably in the 70's and creeping into the 80's very soon as a daily temp..[before hell and aug. 90's and above..

every other day at about 20-30 min.'s a zone should be sweet for now...or go to a total soak-out about every 3-4 days..either way is fine..

sharp blades and long grass is crucial now thru summer...

4'' high is great if you have the thick dense and green lawn..

those with spotty lawns should go no lower than 3'' and 3 and a hook is better..

get a crab-grass control w/fert down before it gets any hotter there.

water it in real good..

setting "H" on the broadcast spreader or wide friggin' open on a hand-held spreader..

DO NOT USE A DROP SPREADER FOR FERT..

WILL BURN THE HELL OUT OF GRASS..

ENJOY THE GREEN...

WATER..WATER...WATER...

Thanks, man! I'll start doing mornings. And I do every other day for 20 minutes a zone. What's a total soak out?

I let Scott's Lawn Service take care of the other stuff.

Been mowing every 4 days. Geez.

I can't wait for the 90's temps because the fawking grackles will leave us then.

I'm gonna go ahead and bump that thread. They are at their peak right now and driving me crazy with all the shit they are throwing around. Jesus!

sounds like Scott rep has you lookin' good..

total soak-out is just that..

lotta old-timers will water til the sod and turf will literally squish between their toes..then not water again for like 4 days..

best for most just to start cycle at about 5am or depending on the # of zones ya have..20 min's should be fine for now..just look for collection [standing water a day after watering..standing water and shade will create root rot and dead spot in the yard...] if ya find a collection spot just lower the watering time in that zone..eliminates the problem..

when we reach the 90's and 100's ask your Scotts guy about 1 hour zones or earlier morning and an afternoon watering as well..he will know your best approach

...nothing says "Cool Dude" like a green lawn in the depth of hell summer heat..

5am sounds like the perfect time to be sitting on the deck with my coffee watching the lawn being watered :)

Morris this article covers your moss question..

http://www.humeseeds.com/lawnmoss.htm

I don't have a lot of experience w/moss..

but if this doesn't solve the problem let me know..

I have buddies w/20 years experience in turf who can solve just about every problem I can't solve ..

The number 1 baddest disease you can get in a lawn is pythium. It starts forming when the temperature and humidity added together equal 180. If you are watering in the morning your humidity level will be 100% until at least noon. This makes the grass more susceptible to diseases.

Here is a little article about it:

http://www.umassturf.org/publications/fact_sheets/diseases/pythium_diseases.pdf

As Old School said keep it tall and healthy.

Grub damage can look about the same, but diseases will have a noticeable ring around them, especially in the morning when the dew is on the ground.

Grub damage usually doesn't show up till the first of August. If you are paying for grub control they should spray around the 3rd week of July, that is when the previous years eggs hatch. They are much easier to control as they are hatching.

I would be glad to help with any other questions. I was a golf course superintendent for 30 years. My main rules for a nice yard are:

Spray for broadleaf weeds in the spring.

Apply a pre-emergent to control the crabgrass.

Only fertilize in the fall after the grass has basically stopped growing, but is still green. This is when the grass is switching from shoot growth to root growth. You will have a healthier plant without having to mow your ass off.

Keep it green

I developed 3 spots of clover, foot aquare areas....

DOes Scott's work on clover? Do I dig it up and reseed???

I bought the generic fertilizeer this spring, Wal-Mart was out of the Scott's. Front yard was fine, but got several dandelions, the back yard was like a flower pot of dandelions. Never again!

a little off topic. We started using Chem-Lawn last year. Before, I always thought only rich people used a lawn service like that, so we always tediously bought weed and feed, crab grass killer, etc every year and laboriously tried to keep up with it and deal with it not working.

We received a flyer in the mail about a free estimate and some other little incentive, so we called them. They quoted us, and I couldn't believe how cheap it was. It has certainly been money well spent, and the yard looks like a picture out of a magazine now. If you're still trying to do all the weed and feed, etc. on your own with those huge 50 pound bags, check them out or whoever does it locally. It is money well spent. They also aerated the yard for almost nothing last year.

Buy a small bottle of Tri Mec. You can spot spray the clover and dandylions, and it won't hurt your grass at all. It works on all broadleaf weeds.

was reading abou the PGR, the cabin has a steep almost unmowable hill that we let grow, but to keep it trimmed we have to stand above, and basically one hand the mowever back and forth over the stepp grade, a little dangerous, or go from below and try to puch up and handle the mower. Would this PGR help in this matter, what about potential runof into lake as for as it's ecosystem is concerned?
