A couple of threads about this but not as much reaction as I would have expected. For a professional sports league to become mired in such a scandal should be cause for concern.
Just my opinion--right or wrong--but basketball seems to be the sport most susceptible to this kind of bullshit. Baseball umpires are calling the pitches but, aside from some favoring the home squad, strike zones seem to be pretty consistent from my experience. I haven't seen much goofiness in hockey save for, again, some favoring of the home side. I could say the same for football, though I haven't seen enough college games to know whether or not this is a factor.
Somewhat new to basketball (6-10 years of viewing, and not constant), this seems to be the sport most dependant on referees to determine the outcome of games. I think I've figured out most of the rules but there are tons of time when contact is made and I can't figure out the call for the life of me...that is, offensive vs defensive fouls and the like. With this news about Donaghy it makes me wonder if basketball is a sport to stay away from. I generally do, as I know this sport like the back of Abe Lincoln's hand.
I'm just surprised that more people haven't commented. A gambling scandal within a professional sport seems ripe for the picking for all us members. Hopefully this bullshit is the exception to the rule. Still, I use the sports partly as an escape from all the bullshit that seems to permeate the more "important" aspects of our existence and such misdemeanors make me question the integrity of what I mistakenly have taken to be a little more sacred.
Hopefully an exception to the rule.
Hope they lock this dick up for a long time to send a message to others, if nothing else.
