A couple of threads about this but not as much reaction as I would have expected. For a professional sports league to become mired in such a scandal should be cause for concern.

Just my opinion--right or wrong--but basketball seems to be the sport most susceptible to this kind of bullshit. Baseball umpires are calling the pitches but, aside from some favoring the home squad, strike zones seem to be pretty consistent from my experience. I haven't seen much goofiness in hockey save for, again, some favoring of the home side. I could say the same for football, though I haven't seen enough college games to know whether or not this is a factor.

Somewhat new to basketball (6-10 years of viewing, and not constant), this seems to be the sport most dependant on referees to determine the outcome of games. I think I've figured out most of the rules but there are tons of time when contact is made and I can't figure out the call for the life of me...that is, offensive vs defensive fouls and the like. With this news about Donaghy it makes me wonder if basketball is a sport to stay away from. I generally do, as I know this sport like the back of Abe Lincoln's hand.

I'm just surprised that more people haven't commented. A gambling scandal within a professional sport seems ripe for the picking for all us members. Hopefully this bullshit is the exception to the rule. Still, I use the sports partly as an escape from all the bullshit that seems to permeate the more "important" aspects of our existence and such misdemeanors make me question the integrity of what I mistakenly have taken to be a little more sacred.

Hopefully an exception to the rule.
Hope they lock this dick up for a long time to send a message to others, if nothing else.

On the course!
I think it's been talked about a good bit. It's actually old news, don't you agree?

But, I would agree that it is probably one of the easier to "fix", based on how many scores there are. I think it's been stated here that a lot of the games actually came pretty close to the "spread", but I think it was like 57% of his questioned games went "over" the number.

The total would be the easiest thing for a ref to get home. Call the ticky-tack shit if the "going gets rough", and get the game home! If it's getting there easy enough on it's own, you have no worries of having to do "the work" yourself! Pretty sweet gig!!!!

The other notable thing was, Vegas was never wise to any of this. The money was never that big. So, whomever was doing this was keeping it pretty quiet, I would guess.

Tim Donaghy?s Lawyer Gives the NBA Even More Headaches

by Marcel Mutoni

As if the whole Tim Donaghy fiasco - in and of itself - wasn?t a big enough concern for the League and its stakeholders, but now Donaghy?s lawyer says that it?s not just Donaghy who?s dirty.

According to a letter written by John Lauro, Donaghy?s lawyer, relationships between refs, coaches and even some players may have ?prevented games from being played on a level playing field.?

According to documents filed by the lawyer, John Lauro, Donaghy provided law enforcement officials with information about N.B.A. matters outside of the government?s original investigation. That included information about the gambling activities of other referees and an instance in which confidential information was suspected of being passed from a referee to a coach.

In a footnote to the document, Lauro suggested that the N.B.A. might have ?pressured? the United States attorney?s office ?into shutting down this prosecution to avoid the disclosure of information unrelated to Tim?s conduct.?

Lauro?s main goal in writing the letter, of course, is to get a reduced sentence for his client - he?s seeking probation for the ex referee. His claims can (and will probably) be easily dismissed as desperate claims by a desperate man, but the simple fact that they have been made in the first place, is a concern.
...........................................................

I believe that this is much more pervasive than just Timmy. And it may still be going on for all we know.

NBA has always been crazy with total plays. Got to think that this would be the easiest to control for refs, players, coachs, etc.

There could be such a coverup going on that we dont even know.

And lets face it, all sports are subject to this same level of cheating by inside people.

I remember one guy in here one time, we were talking about cheating in sports, and he said that if there was cheating going on , he would just try to bet with the cheaters if he could.

When there is this kind of stuff going on, if you are betting on the NBA for instance.

your just stupid.

1 dumb quick comment.....all you have to do is watch these playoffs.....how can a team win by 20 at home then go on the road and lose by 20 thats a 40 point swing!!!!! Along with in the 1st round the JAZZ lose both games at home to open where they were the BEST HOME TEAM IN THE LEAGUE, then go on the road and WIN and they werent good on the road at all!! Same can be said for the Celtics go 7 games with the Hawks being unable to win in Atlanta THE WORSE TEAM IN THE PLAYOFFS then come to Boston and win by 30.....just too many coincedences forme to think the stuff is over, and it wasnt bigger the TIM. We hear almost everyday about SPYGATE in the NFL but this is PROVEN THAT SOMEONE WAS FIXING GAMES and its hardly on the news or ESPN...you read small articles in the newspaper if you are lucky!!!! Proof is in the pudding and its best to find something else to bet on during NBA season if the losses hurt you, like tossing quarters or going to the Casino!!! BOL and David Stern is as crooked as my DICK in my opinion!!!

I remember a guy on this site who brought this stuff up and was shouted down over and over again and now it looks like he was right. But hey if you can trick most people into going to war under the guise of freedom why can't you just steal their money handicapping and call them bad handicappers? And they even give you the choice of any game to bet and you get first dibs on the side:shrug:.

yep. very little in the US is on the up and up. nothing with big money involved. bizarre ref calls are used to condition the masses to accept political lies. consume! obey! pay taxes! and if you have any questions, stifle y'self already. Idiocracy is here. but you can figure marketing and corruption into the mix when you cap. have to. that's what can actually make the nba easier, in certain circumstances, than other sports.

basketball and football are hugely susceptible to referee interference. not baseball. which is why baseball will never go away, altho other sports may eclipse it in popularity from time to time.

ESPN has a poll up now on officiating.

http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/page2/polling?event_id=3502

10) Given the Tim Donaghy scandal, how much trust do you have in the neutrality of officials?

54.7% I think there are other Donaghys out there, but it's isolated
26.5% I have serious doubts that creep into every game I watch
18.8% I have little doubt that the majority of officials are uncompromised

11) Do you believe a league office would ever influence its refs to affect the results in a desired way?

67.9% Yes
32.1% No

the public more or less knows it is being lied to, in sports as in politics. but without any real journalists (howard cosell's point) covering sports, the best the public can do is guess what precisely is going on by reasoning backwards from evidence.

anyone can see that nba refs make calls based on the score in the game. so, for example, if the home team is down 15 point mid-2q and the opponent makes a borderline charge, it will always be called a charge. whereas, if the road team were down 15, there would be either no call or blocking. that's one example of score-based reffing the nba practices as a matter of course.

Its like insider trading my brother. When you are to thick headed to even consider that some of these games may be rigged then you will get swallowed up by the gambling gods.:s1:

Hey judgy i rip 19 out of 21 picks last week. Guess how? Betting the games would go to the books being they were heavily bet games. Let me know if you want me to list them for ya. One of the two losses was a wash of a bet i didn't like so really it was 18 out of 19.
