Organic food has no nutritional or health benefits over ordinary food, according to a major study published Wednesday.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine said consumers were paying higher prices for organic food because of its perceived health benefits, creating a global organic market worth an estimated $48 billion in 2007.

A systematic review of 162 scientific papers published in the scientific literature over the last 50 years, however, found there was no significant difference.

"A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance," said Alan Dangour, one of the report's authors.

"Our review indicates that there is currently no evidence to support the selection of organically over conventionally produced foods on the basis of nutritional superiority."

The results of research, which was commissioned by the British government's Food Standards Agency, were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Sales of organic food have fallen in some markets, including Britain, as recession has led consumers to cut back on purchases.

The Soil Association said in April that growth in sales of organic products in Britain slowed to just 1.7 percent in 2008, well below the average annual growth rate of 26 percent over the last decade, following a plunge in demand at the end of the year.

only your wallet knows the difference

hmmm...

I'll have to go with it's healthier if it has not been doused with pesticides. I'm not sold on the fertilizer being any different. agent and HH are very knowledgeable on this, so I'm sure they'll chime in.

I use to think all bs too, but I do buy some organic foods, and they are definitely better. Organic milk is a good starter for somebody who has never eaten organic. Very tasty, and goes without spoiling for 3-4 times longer than regular milk.

Uh, yeah. Agent definitely will. He must be outside tending to his wheat field and can't hear the buzzer or see the flashing light going off on his computer.

half gallon is about $1.50 more, but u won't be pouring any of it out. Give it a shot. I promise you'll love it. If u get some today, the expiration won't be until around the first of September, maybe later.

Well, there's also no research showing pesticides and artificial stuff like aspartame may be linked to cancer but it doesn't mean it's not possible. I guess it's one of those things where it makes you feel better to do it then go for it-

ding ding ding ding!!!....

did the researchers whiff on the fact that the idea behind eating organic was to not ingest all the pesticides, hormones and crap added to food and injected in livestock?....

wacademia is clueless as usual...

I would also like to add (subtract, divide, and possiblly multiply) to Weasel's statement: This study focuses the nutrient levels. That is a huge problem with the study because you can coat nutrients with all kinds of other garbage that is unhealthy for you.

Focus on nutrients and not natural foods is the goal of the food industry. Opt out while you can. There is a reason for the prevalence of "Western Diseases".

2 WEEKS! how long do you let the meatballs stay in the fridge, 2months or until they are completely engulfed by the fungus? If the milk isnt used within 7 days, youre buying too much. Who the hell wants 10 or 12 day old milk REGARDLESS of what a date stamp says:mj02:

This study says Organic and Non-Organic have the same nutrients.

As alluded to by folks here... that is only half the story.

10g Vitamin C + hormones + pestacides vs.
10g Vitamin C

That is the choice you make when buying organic or not.

2 weeks :mj07: This nitwit is insane. Prolly thinks that sour taste in day 6 is just a little flavoring.
