Each week my brother and I take turns caring for our parents 24/7 we're been doing this now going on 2 years now, mom's 90 & step dad's 81 both with Dementia....Each day is an adventure with them, you never know what they'll do or say or remember.

Today starts my four days in a row stint with them which means plenty of time to post here that helps keep my sanity, in turn probably drives Jack & IE and many members insane.....I walk through the door as my brother runs out, I guess his night was a tad overwhelming, better him than me LOL.....

So as soon as I say my "Good Mornings" I sit down and start on my paperwork for our business....My step dad come in informs me they want to go out to Lunch to the Rockport Diner which is about 15 mins away, no big deal.....There was a 15 min argument between the parents over if they should leave at 10:30 or 10:40 (oh boy, lunch at 11:00), they keep asking what I thought they should leave, told them I'm just the driver--- because it's a no win situation if I choose....Mom says 10:40, so I know it's going to be 10:40....We'll drive the same roads we always do, and they argue the whole way over anything and everything....

So we'll get to the Diner, break out the walker and make our way in.....They'll both order waters and complain how expensive everything is to the waitress.....Ma will say how good the sandwiches are to stir me to the least expensive items....They always have me order first, so I usually do a cup of soup or salad to keep the tab down.....They both end up ordering Lobster Rolls....LOL

The waitress will come back and ask if anyone wants desert, they'll make her go through the list and both will say they're full.....The tab will come and they'll pay and leave a dollar tip, so I'll get them up and start to head out the door tossing a $10 spot on the table....

The rest of the afternoon will be spent talking about how expensive the meal was and that's the last time their going to go out to eat....

Sports, it rings true. Try taking them to the casino. My mother 90 wants me to take her and my father 90 with dementia just about every week.

I came home from work the other day and all my outdoor chairs and a table were gone. The old man says he is just getting ready for winter! It was 90 degrees that day.

:0008 Sports I sometimes read this little meditation & today's seemed fitting.

" Fortunate are the people with deep roots " Deep roots offer strength & stability , they nourish it plentifully. They anchor it when fierce winds blow. We discover that all things can be handled; no situation is too much for us. Strength , confidence , freedom from fear are the benefits of our deepening roots.

I know kinda deep but I like it !

Back at the homestead....True to form arguing most of the way up, Johns in a nursing home, no he isn't....yes he is....well, truth be known John passed two years ago....

We get to the Diner and the place is pretty well packed at 11:00, I look around and I'm the youngest customer in there by a good 20 years and I'm 52....We look at the special board and everything has mashed potato with some sort of meat and gravy, staying the hell away from that....

Menus come, two , two waters ordered so I said screw it "Pepsi please".....Menus open and Mom fires the first shot "would you looks at these price, that's awful, don't they have soups/chowders anymore?"....on the back page mom....Step dad chimes in "Open faced roast beef sandwich with mash & gravy looks good"...........So I'm asked what I want, well a bacon-blue cheese burger sounds good.....Don't you want one of the specials, the open faced roast beef looks good....fine, that's what I'll have....

Waitress comes, he'll have the open face roast beef sandwich (great, thanks).....Mom then orders the same, step dad rolls the dice and orders Broiled Scallops with a bowl of Seafood Chowder to go...Mom, oh that sounds good I'll change mine to the same.......

Meals come, the traditional "they put way to much food on my plate"....I'm so excited, my roast beef is leftover sandwich roast beef smothered in can gravy with cold instant potato, YUM!!!!....A half hour later 3/4 of their food ends up in a to go box....Tab is paid, couple of bucks on the table....Start the head for the door, have my 10 spot ready to toss down when no one is looking....

In route home we make the mandatory stop at Dunkin Donuts Drive-Thru for two Senior Hot Chocolates with Whip Cream......Home now with both crashed in their chairs, I'm off to grab a couple of Tums.....:0008

Thanks for the stories. I read them and smile the whole time. Reminds me of my grandparents. I helped take care of them and it was very tough at times. They've been gone for two years and I can't express how much I miss them. Getting old sucks and the dementia can be draining but there was something comforting just having them around to tell them I love them.

I visited my mom when she was in a nursing home about 4-5x a week & most of the time she didn't say much....One day she asks me if I am working....I answered that I am not & told her that I am a bum....She leaned out from her wheelchair & whispered to me...." Not too loud, the neighbors may hear"....

My wife & I just started laughing & then my mom did also....

My wife then got a little emotional & I had to walk away to be by myself....

It is sad to see how dementia takes over a loved one's mind!!

My wife stepped in for a day last week to give me a break....She gave mom a shower and did her hair, when mom was heading to heading to her chair mom yells to my step dad "I'm done with my shower she'll give you yours now".....My wife was mortified.....
