I have a toro mower, the self propelled mechanism stopped working. I took it to a local guy who said it would be about 150$ to repair so I will just get a new one. It was only 4 years old. He asked if I had a steep incline and I do, where the mower is at 45degrees when I walk that part. He said that can kill the self propel transmission. Is that accurate?

Since I'm in the market for a new push mower, what do you recommend?

So after reading up it appears a lot of people have this issue at year 3 with the Toro self propelled. Unfortunate to spend 350-400$ and maintain it well to have it end up being a design flaw. I don't have enough land to need a ride mower, should I look at getting commercial grade?

And while I have you...bagging vs mulching...what say you?

front gear in Toro's do have a tendency to wear out ..

I still use them because the high wheel $300.00 from HomeDepot is a great throw away model.Beat the hell out of for 2 years or so and then give them away.

If you have tried a rear drive Honda or other rear drives[on sale at homedepot this week for $400.00] and like that rear drive motion they are super choice with double blade. The Honda will cut like a knife thru hot butter and they bag well.

I don't care for the rear drive..Toro with front drive and tip and turn on rear wheels have been my choice for 12 years now.The pace at which we work is conducive to pulling backwards out of corners..which is what you do with a Honda rear drive..rear gear dis-engages with the backward motion into idle and reengages with the forward thrust.

Don't know how big the lawn is so hard to say if ya should go up a notch to 500 or 600 dollar for a low end commerical self propelled..

can tell ya to stay away from the personal pace in any of the manufacturers..pieces of shyt and strips gears like a poll dancer.

don't forget the 10% discount at HomeDepot for all active and retired military if it applies.

here to help...

31 cuts this week is about 18 hours of cut/blow and go time.

as we say by the blade sharpening machine..

give me more.......

for healthy lawns mulch when you can..

4'' [31/2 if lawn is not super super thick] high cut every weekend while necessary will produce that Hollywood Lawn with the knock ya down green of splendor.

Come fall I bag just about every account for that pristine look. The chopped leaves even finely minced just don't look good..

If forced to cut damp I bag ..Damp will leave a trail and can't have that..

Thanks so much old school. I had the personal pace, so that must have been the issue. It was a rear drive. I was checking out the Honda you mentioned and am going to head on over to home depot to give it a shot. Thanks man :0074

you should like this mower..

bull strong for a homeowner model..

keep both blades sharp and that lawn of yours will shine like a new dime..

You weren't kidding....lawn with my beat up toro would take 30 plus, with this one finished in less than 15. That thing has some kick to it, first time I wasn't ready for it

Thanks for your help!
