I took his truck down to have a recall done on it and while I was sitting in the waiting room I just wanted to punch the service writer who was talking to an elderly couple. These people had a Camry and it was their only vehicle. They had to be pushing 75+ years old. The service writer comes out to the waiting room and tells these poor folks that they need to have their brake fluid flushed at the tune of $195! They immediately agreed because they wanted to make sure their car was in good running order. The whole time I'm sitting there screaming inside my head "Don't do it!" But I can't open my mouth and dispute it. Do you know what they do when they flush your brake fluid? They take your car in the back, use a suction gun and pull the fluid in the reservoir out and put clean fluid in it and put the cap back on. They then proceed to go to lunch and an hour later come back out to let you know your car is done. Dealerships are the biggest gougers of customers there are.
They actually tried to up sell a battery to me and a serpentine belt on his truck that day also. To replace the battery and the belt was over $200! I told him I would bring that to his attention when I got back to work and we could take care of it. He then got huffy and said "well when your belt breaks it's going to let you sit and you'll be lucky if it starts for all the corrosion that's on it." I said we would take care of it. As I'm ready to walk out the door he also says "oh by the way the water pump is leaking too." I said thanks and left.
The only reason they brought the belt and the battery up was so they could up sell it while I was there. The water pump would have required me to leave the vehicle.
So I get back to work and tell him all this. Eventually we replaced the belt and the battery. He put the truck up on the lift that day to look at the water pump and there was residue of coolant but it looked like it was spilled when filling the reservoir. To this day we haven't needed to change the water pump because it isn't leaking.
I know how it is to be taken across by a garage when you're a woman. When in was in high school I had squealing brakes on my car. So I took it to the local garage in town. They called me and said I needed front calipers, rotors, and brakes to the tune of $600. Going to school and working part time $600 wasn't in my budget. So I took it out to PaSprints garage because I wanted a second opinion. He pulls the drivers side front wheel off and a stone falls out. He puts the wheel back on a takes it for a road test and the noise is gone. No charge. From that point on I never took my car anywhere else. Low and behold 8 years later I start working for him and I tell people that story all the time. I've been there unbelievably almost 13 years now.
