i think

i think

helen hit on it....she deserves our RESPECT and gratitude for doing her duty(even though like many, she enlisted to get an education or some of the other perks gleaned from military service....that`s what i read,anyway)......that`s not the issue...she did serve and was seriously wounded.....

a hero?......i don`t think so...i`ve heard about assholes that go mountain climbing and get involved in avalanches or just get lost and survive in the wild are heros.....again,i don`t think so....having a strong survival instinct and an inclination towards self preservation does not a hero make...

we live in a politically correct, media driven society....and women in the military have recently been a bone of contention.....you knew that if something like this ever presented itself it was going to be jumped on by the liberal press faster than michael jackson at a boy scout sleep over(and i`m not a racist.......my favorite porno is the one with reese witherspoon getting t-boned by james earl jones)........:nono:

but,the fact that it was an excellent opportunity to show a woman in a military situation looking like rambo....the initial reports had her trying to shoot her way out of the situation and emptying her gun....we now know that wasn`t the case.....or she`d be dead....

i`m not putting her down or making light of the situation....i totally respect her service to our country, the sacrifice she made....her people should be proud of her.......hell,i`m proud of her......

she did her job.....she did what her country asked of her.....she`s aces in my book.....

but a hero?........i don`t know....that`s a totally subjective opinion....

forgive yyz- he's obviously a bitter little man who somehow felt the need to cast a negative op-ed about a 19yr old female soldier who served her country well- I would offer to you all that yyz wouldn't have lasted a week in basic.

btw- if that's really your license plate, I've got 3 words for ya- get a life

oh, and before I forget, who vacations in Florida in the middle of summer? oops forgot- you must have gotten a great deal ;)

I still say she deserves much credit. Hero gets alittle steep. But hey everyone has there own thoughts. But folks lets try and not get to nasty with this one. One other point. I do have one hero who was a pow. But he was one for over 3 years. I dont believe I saw a parade or big time welcome home speeches for him. He got ahand shake when he got off the plane. He's one hell of a good Senator from Arz. Can you even get close to thinking what happen to him in 3 years. How many remember his name. I gave you a good hint.

I don't know that Jessica Lynch ever proclaimed herself a hero. I think the media pretty much did that. I would hazard to guess that the press figured that the good ole U.S. of A needed a shot in the arm, which is of course what they always do. I find it a little hard to fathom that people that are so willingly lead by the nose on one subject, find fault in another. The media spin on any and all subjects control the majority of the social conscience. You see it on television so it must be true. Deny it all you want then ask yourself how you feel about Richard Jewel, O.J. Simpson, Kobe Bryant, Bill Clinton, or who was that movie with Denzel Washington about...the fighter that got imprisoned...I forgot his name, what do any of you know about those people at all except what the media tells you. Richard Jewel and O.J. were both aquitted by a jury of their peers yet who would you like to hang and why? Bill and Kobe both commited adultery yet one came as such a surprise to the media and yourselves, one is a Rhodes Scholar the other a high school graduate but the other commited the much worse sin right? Barnstorm or whatever the hell his name is was convicted of crimes he didn't commit and educated himself and because he was shown as a oppressed innocent he is a modern day hero. My hero's don't come on a stamp and don't have clothing lines. Watch out who you call a hero. Chances are the hero is a media made man.

djv, John McCain:). I don't agree with some of his political view, but he's a HERO in my book. If I remember correctly, he was shot down by a SAM, refused early release because he didn't want to be a propaganda prize, and ended up being a POW for 5 year.

Sen Mcain (SP?) did 7 long years at the "Hanoi Hilton" during that war and has earned that HERO status. He refused to be released because his comrades would be left there to suffer. He was a leader amongst the men at the "hotel" with him. On one occasion right before he was set to make a video tape by the Viets, on which he was supposed to be shown to be ok, and in decent health and treated fairly, he broke the legs off of a wooden chair and bashed his face with it and put his face thru a window in order to scar it and injure himself in a way that the world could see. He helped devise a rude Morse code type system of tapping on the walls between cages andn cells so that inmates could "talk" to each other.

Jessica Lynch is not a HERO in my opinion. Yea it sucked to be her, but she didnt do anything to earn that hero status.

The purple heart... also known as the "dummy award" amongst us... it represents being injured and wounded in battle.
translation = You got shot you dumb f*ck!
and those are the words right out of just about every person who has earned it and lived thru it.

FDC is right on. Lynch never proclaimed herself a hero - others did it. It isn't fair to criticize her for something she had no control over. Whether she is indeed a hero or not simply goes to your personal definition.

I'm glad she's home safely, and I wish all the other heros were home as well. Let's face this fact too, if she were not a woman, all this hoopla would not have happened. She gained media hero status because she is a woman, and that's the bottom line.

On the same side of that coin if she were a man you guys wouldn't be bitchin about it. As those people who have been and are still posting about this we don't get to vote on the degrees of heroics. She IS heroice along with those who served unscathed, who died, didn't die, or who were catured for some reason other than bad sense of direction or stupidity. I don't feel that we should "gage" level of heroics but stand in awe and appreciation of her contribution.

Also - JM and AR you guys made good points and thats why I always enjoyed reading your posts.

FDC its Reuben 'hurricane' Carter.
From what I understand Jessica Lynch has blocked out almost all memory of what happened over there, (Iraq). It certainly isn't her fault the media has blown this up so much. One report said her hometown was so small it didn't even have a stoplight

definition of hero--if the shoe fits wear it.

A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.

definition of courage

The state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution; bravery.

A note of interest on
"oh, and before I forget, who vacations in Florida in the middle of summer? oops forgot- you must have gotten a great deal "

I used to think the same thing which seems quite logical but found property that rents for $1,800 "a week" May thru July is rented for $1,500 "a month" in winter and that is if you are lucky to find long term snowbirds from Canada.--but one would surely not think that.

Hellah10 said the same thing in his letter.

and I quote

"this pfc lynch bullshit is getting out of hand. half of us wish she stayed captured. how the **** is the media gonna blow up a pow like this. we are doing 10 times more work then she will ever do in the service and put up with more bullshit then she will ever see in her life. and armed forces network says that marshall gave her a full ride - that makes me hate her even more. i dont care if we are on the same team either. if we are on the same team, then we want the same treatment. trust me when i say this, we dont give a **** about lynch and her stupid escapade of being captured. the media here is even asking us if we know who she is! how ****ing stupid. will cnn be in our face when our company returns!?? **** no they wont! drag her ass back to southern iraq, there is more work to be done."

well looks like he`s sick of it too lol

On the course!
DTB,

I come down here a couple of times a year. To me, the weather sucks year round, and the place is ugly. I only come to see my family. The summer time is the only time I can bring my daughter without her missing school.

It's humid and 90 every day, but central air and a pool keep it reasonable. I like this better than January or February, because so many times it is quite cold down here. I like the beach, and it's not fun to wear a parka out there.

The weather isn't really a big concern to me, but rather seeing my family. I can't immagine sitting in a little 'office' 40 hrs a week, and never seeing other parts of the country. Hell, I would go nuts! I might even hate my existence so much that I resort to coming to MadJacks' with the sole intention of pissing in other people's threads, and telling them to 'get a life', because I wish I had one!

Thank god I get out now and again!
