On the same side of that coin if she were a man you guys wouldn't be bitchin about it. As those people who have been and are still posting about this we don't get to vote on the degrees of heroics. She IS heroice along with those who served unscathed, who died, didn't die, or who were catured for some reason other than bad sense of direction or stupidity. I don't feel that we should "gage" level of heroics but stand in awe and appreciation of her contribution.

Also - JM and AR you guys made good points and thats why I always enjoyed reading your posts.

I'm certainly not bitching about it, NickiD. Like I said, I'm glad she's home safely. My point was that the media glorified her as a hero because she is a woman. How can anybody deny that?

I'm glad she's home safely, and I wish all the other heros were home as well. Let's face this fact too, if she were not a woman, all this hoopla would not have happened. She gained media hero status because she is a woman, and that's the bottom line.

Finally someone hits the crux of the situation! Being a woman is the ONLY reason she's being tabbed a hero. Talk about ludicrous! It's a sad state indeed when the MEN are out there fighting and dying and becoming nothing more than afterthoughts (how many of you female posters here know the names of ONE man over there?) and saving Jessica so she can come home and be praised as the HERO..

Don't get me wrong, I know there are many women who fought over there as well and they are equally deserving. I just think it's bass-ackwards that we don't even know the names of the REAL heros who were (and still are) over there risking there lives while the whole damn country knows the name of ONE woman who just happened to get her ass saved...

anyone here honestly think a 19 year old male would be getting this kind of attention?

Justinsmom ... you are exactly right ... regard every soldier who fights for this country a hero then ... the thing that pisses me off is that she gets portrayed like she is more worthy of being a hero than anyone else who was and is still over there. I am assuming that is what most people who are annoyed by her publicity are referring to. There were thousands of people over there fighting for this country and yet she is getting special treatment that no one else over there got. That is what pisses me off ... nothing against her in general.

well said lightning, but if you all recall for me and many others when this story broke it was like a breath of fresh air after watching cnn 24-7 for days ................This girl was labeled a "HERO" and didn't even know it! Then of course the media twisted everything up .................Why do you think she wasn't offered movie rights like she was offered when she first got home?? I don't buy that she forgets...........The story that the media told and the true story is just completely different..........What does everyone think about that ? ? ? ?

THE SHOCK AND AWWW campaigne had everyone glue to disaster and her rescue brought some neccessary HOPE! for other pow's and there families , I would have to agree with you guys here.......... hey Miss Your nephew wasn't given extra special attention when he returned ..............Does he deserve it HELL YEH! he was on the front lines fighting ..................I think what they are saying is all right enough about Jessica what did she really do, to earn the HERO status?????and all of this special treatment none of the other guys and girls are getting that when they return

BTW- I think even if it was a male in this cituation it would have hit the med ia hard because like I said befor there rewasn't any good news out there for days prior to this rescue and the gener al public was craving for any bits of hope.................

Main Entry: he?ro
Pronunciation: 'hir-(")O, 'hE-(")rO
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural heroes
Etymology: Latin heros, from Greek hErOs
a: a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities b: one that shows great courage

I took the above definition from the Merrian-Webster Online Dictionary. There were a few other passages, these fit the topic.

As I said previously, Jessica Lynch endured a horrifying time in her life. Just as the men POWs have. It really sucks that they aren't getting the publicity that Lynch is. Maybe it does have something to do with the daring rescue. I really don't know. Maybe some people don't have to see a huge "S" on a person's chest to call them a hero. My interpretation of the definition given by Merriam-Webster, I would say that label is appropriate in Lynch's case, as with every other soldier that has served our country.

I also looked up the names of the POWs so that we FEMALE posters will have them handy :thefinger

Spc. Edgar Hernandez

Spc. Joseph Hudson

Spc. Shoshana Johnson

Pfc. Patrick Miller

Sgt. James Riley

CWO David Williams

CWO Ronald Young

They were all brought home safely also!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, I think it is upsurd that it is getting turned into a man/woman race here. WHATEVER! She choose, just like the other 160,000 MEN AND WOMEN over there, to serve our country, and I don't care for what reason she choose, it doesn't take away from her CHOICE. She went through a terrible ordeal, I do believe she was tortured, and she survived and she is a HERO TO ME and the MEN AND WOMEN who went in to rescue her are HERO'S also. EVERY SINGLE MAN AND WOMAN OVER THERE IS A HERO TO ME. I don't believe you have to be shot or maned in order to be labeled a HERO.

Every firefighter that went to the WTC was a hero to me, every IRON WORKER that went to the WTC is a HERO to me, every POLICE OFFICER, and CIVILIAN that went to help their fellow man and woman is a HERO to ME. Not just the ones that died trying but EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM.

John McCain - that's my idea of a real war hero. Was a POW, refused to be released without the men under his command, spent three more years in captivity.

I don't blame Lynch, good luck to her. But really, how pathetic is the media and our celebrity-obessed culture? In some ways it is our fault for watching it.

O.K. so the guys name is hurricane.....regardless...there are still a whole bunch of people that saw that movie and thought...."ohhhhh that poor man, he was framed"....and they will shed a tear for poor old Hurricane who just happened to have an extensive criminal background and was not a nice man when arrested. He deserved to be incarcerated. He was ...at best....rehabilitated when released....my point being is that the social conscience is easily swayed. Imagine what would have happened had they interviewed a Marine that has been in country fighting for a year or so and asked him about Jessica Lynch? Would he proclaim her a hero? I served my country and have the medals to prove it. I know one thing for sure, if I were captured and detained, I would not want to be called hero. If I was wounded I would not want to be called a hero. If I went to battle and returned home victorious with 15 confirmed kills I would not want to be called hero. If you call anyone anything, call them a Marine, or a soldier or a warrior or whatever because that is what we all signed on to be. Jessica served her country and my hats off to her, welcome aboard, beyond that...........ehhh.....I got nothing.......sorry about your luck Jess:shrug:

a hero

a hero

some people point out that she gets her education paid for (or part of it), well thats terrible. I mean a young person who wants to serve her country and improve herself by going to school.....shocking.

the same people who complain about her will be the same people who whine if she make a dime off of this experience. have no fear you can soon watch the kobe trial. this story will not get 5% of what that "newsworthy trial" will get.

she has handled herself with grace and class, as for being a woman, she looks good on a magazine cover, that does play into it, still she had the courage of serving.

thanks
