NCAA YTD: 19-11 (+6.84*)
NFL YTD: 7-7 (-0.86*)
Top Plays (included above): 1-1 (-0.15*)

San Jose State(+10) over Utah State (1*)
- - There is evidence to suggest Utah State gave a huge effort against USC last week, and now has to match that intensity once again on a short week road trip, while San Jose State may have had their focus on this week's rivalry while calling on Minnesota last week. http://www.mercurynews.com/news/ci_24181546/san-jose-state-looking-atone-last-years-big On the whole, enough intangibles appear tangible to warrant speculation on the chances that a live dog will be yapping in prime time . . . FWIW, I really want to win this wager as I test the waters before possibly stepping out with a rather full card on Saturday.

Whiffed on that one.

- - Earlier in the week I heard on ESPN radio that last week, 55 of 57 NCAA favorites won their games; not covered, but won SU. Don't know if it's accurate, but it's what I heard. This week, 2 dogs have already won SU, with Virginia Tech and Iowa State.

Arizona State(-4) over USC (1*)
- - USC getting a desperately needed win last week didn't much look like it turned any corners under HC Lane Kiffiin, whose squads away from home are on a 0-7 ATS run. My money in the desert is on an ASU team believing they are ready to take a big step toward becoming relevant in their division.

SMU(+17) over TCU (1*)
- - This Metroplex War for the Iron Skillet has the full attention of the miserable stepchild. Frogs 3-7-1 last 11 as home favorites, while HC June Jones has covered in last four against HC Patterson. I don't think I'll whiff on this one, but SMU will probably screw the pooch for me.

Pittsburgh(Ov28) vs. Virginia (1*)
- - I expect Pitt to cover, and I certainly expect them to be on the attack.

Iowa(-1) over Minnesota (1*)
Minnesota(Un21') (1*)

- - There are probably better games out there, but I've got an opinion and will take a stand. Iowa is still a work in progress but from Day #1 has definitely been making the strides you look for in a team . . . The way to gash Iowa is to spread the field by getting your playmakers in space by quickness and design. While Minnesota is stout on both sides of the ball, their lumbering 4 rushing TD QB with no aerial component is not going to strike any fear in the Hawkeyes . . . Definitely shaping up as a hard hitting border war, and the line should be a tossup that goes under the number, but if anyone takes charge in this Big Ten lid lifter at Kinnick North, I like my chances with the Hawkeyes.

Florida State(-24) over Boston College (1*)
- - If USC can dismantle BC, I really expect no less from Florida State, wherever the game is played.

Texas A&M(-14) over Arkansas (1*)
- - HC Sumlin has shown me enough in important tilts to earn nothing but my respect here.

That's a start . . .
