Upstairs watching sports on the big TV.
I found this discussion interesting....I know a couple 18 year old family acquaintances that can barely mow a lawn...much less understand the power and consequences of their voting right.

Credit the 18 yr old voting right to Vietnam; voter age was lowered in tune with the protesters mantra..."If I can kill or be killed for my country, I should be able to vote."
For today's younger crowd, protesting in the late 60's was an art form.

Article here, http://markstcyr.com/2015/06/07/should-we-raise-the-voting-age/

An excerpt...

"Should a person or group that has never experienced what is known by all as ?real life? while simultaneously being seen by many legal standards as not having the full credentials to be recognized as an ?adult? have the ability to vote directly for, or vote for candidates responsible in the setting of the nations wage laws, tax laws, business law, national debt, business tax structures, business mandates, international trade policies, monetary policy, or most importantly ? whether to send their brethren off to war where people die for real ? not in some video game or movie?
All the while they?ve never been responsible for anything more than ?school? and in many cases not subject to feel the direct consequences of their votes until some 8 years or even longer after the age of 18?" :00x31

You do realize that this has never been the case in your lifetime, which gives you no frame of reference to truly "know" whether or not the "country was much better."

Peace! :)

Do not say "Why were the former days better than these?" For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.

Owning land sounds like a good start...it would encourage ownership and increase revenue as ownership increases.

I also would like to see, in lieu of property ownership, some form of service...military or some social service, right out of high school, or college.

I just wish there was something in place, because I take the time to be informed about the candidates and someone who might not be a citizen of this country can cancel out my vote.

If voting were held in higher regard, I think more people would use it wiser.

Well, turf, I agree with you that some sort of mandatory public service, military, social, educational, etc is something I'd like to see too, regardless of property ownership. Invest something of yourself in your country.

However I disagree about property ownership. Certainly someone can be a good, patriotic and informed voter and live in an apartment.

However, you are foolish to think that non-citizens cancel out your vote. Nobody gets registered to vote unless and until they present a birth certificate or naturalization papers. I had to and so did you and so does everyone else.

Those who claim that illegals vote are either ignorant or Fox News/Rush Limbaugh lairs.

I never knew you had to present a birth certificate or a passport when registering to vote. I thought all you needed was a drivers license, and the ability to lie about your citizenship. And with states giving drivers license to illegals, it seems to make the probability of fraud increase.

But with that being said, I hope you're right...I haven't investigated the process, but I guess I should edify myself so that I can't be duped into thinking incorrectly.

Thanks for the info.:toast:

In EVERY state you must have a Social Security Card to register.

And here are the requirements to obtain a SS card, directly from the Social Security website:

Original Card for a U.S. Born Adult
Important

You must present original documents or copies certified by the agency that issued them. We cannot accept photocopies or notarized copies. All documents must be current (not expired). We cannot accept a receipt showing you applied for the document.
What original documents do I need?

Citizenship

We can accept only certain documents as proof of U.S. citizenship. These include a U.S. birth certificate or a U.S. passport.

Birth Certificate or passport. Period. End of discussion.

Morons like SEND IT cannot tell a lie from the truth. They should be banned from voting on the grounds of gross stupidity.
