I was with the in-laws and my mother in law is a huge horse person, etc and when it happened I said "break out the shotgun". I don't think I'll be getting a steak tonight :sadwave:

seeing barbaro break down really put a damper on my day.......I can guarantee you this horse is looked upon as a family member by its owners, trainers, etc.....to just shrug it off as "it's a horse, nobody died" is a very sad mentality that I would imagine most pet owners and animal lovers in general can't repect. I'll give you my reality.....my reality is knowing that I could name you 10 people right now off of the top of my head that I would like to see put down instead of what I witnessed today...it was a very sad day that could become worse if this horse has to be euthanized. :sadwave:

Nice penguinfan, a true sports fan does not care about the $$ in a tragedy of this magnitude. I bet you cheered when Carson Palmer went down and handed you the game... Jack A$$

I had $100 in wagers involving Barbaro (win bet, exacta, tri's) and I could care less that I didnt hit any of them. Today/tonight is the worst I have felt after viewing any sporting event. Sure its possible Barbaro could have ended up not winning the Triple Crown, but its just not right to see him injured like this. I honestly believe he had a great chance to win all 3 if this hadn't happened, you just dont see horses win the Derby like he did anymore.
I am a big horse racing fan and have been since I was young, and anyone that can honestly feel like what happened today wasn't terrible just because it occured to a horse instead of a human is a pathetic person.

Get well Barbaro!

Tragedy???? Please it's a fricking animal, and not a very bright one at that. Complain to the breeders and owners who push the envelope and try for bigger and faster horses, on toothpick like legs, and see if they care about 'compassion'. I will admit, that i turned the channel when he went lame cause i'm not one who likes seeing animals in distress, but c'mon man, if this were a cow, we'd be saying pass the a-1 sauce.

Once again I'm gonna ask for a reality check here.

How many of you "better than thou" types would ever have even seen a horse race in your life if you couldn't bet on it? Would horse racing even exist if you couldn't bet on it?

NO and NO, I'm sure. There is no "Love of the sport" here. These animals are bred, born and raised for one purpose only.

Am I happy the horse got hurt and will probably be put down? Again, no, but it's hardly the national tragedy you guys are making it out to be.

Horses get hurt/put down EVERY DAY because of racing but I can't find one post by you guys about any other horse this has happened to. Where is the daily outcry and mourning for them?

Please guys, it's a bet and it's a horse, sorry it happened but I'll be betting on horses today just the same and so will any other regular horse player, christ.

I for one have watched horse racing for years, usually the last 4 or 5 on a card with out betting cuz I lost my money the first 5 or 6, very sad what happened, yes it happens everyday. I think what makes this one more special is the stories and hype around it, and how this will affect the lives of those who are connected to the horse, especially the Matz family.

Peace,
ll

Most people who watch the 3 Triple Crown races on TV do not wager on the events. The fact that it's on national TV and the media coverage is what gives these horses a face and a story that creates an emotional connection for the casual masses.

Penguinfan's reaction is probably typical of a depressed person whose lost a lot of money betting on horses and therefore has developed an inherent disdain for the animals.

Penguinfan you are a ****ing worthless pile of shit.....Must be one of these guys that thinks an animal doesnt have feelings or that they dont matter.
It was terrible what happened and if you don't feel some kind of sympathy for the horse and his connections, you truely are a sad human being.

The reports i have heard is that Barabaro SHOULD be ok as long as it didnt effect the blood supply...fingers crossed for barbaro....these top-notch horses are true athletes and should have the respect of everyone.

By far the saddest thing I ever seen in horse racing was the dual between probably 2 of the best fillies ever Go For Wand and Bayakoa. Go For Wand was very small filly with VERY BIG heart.
These 2 were rivals equal to Affirmed and Alydar. In the big race they came down wire neck and neck and the little filly Go For Wand gave it more than her all snapping her leg. It still gets me emotional and when pulling up this link I couldn't bear to watch video of ordeal as I can still recall it as vividly as day it happened.:(

--penguinfan--watch video and let me know which you think was more disurbing--it or Johnnie Cochran's funeral.

I feel pretty much the same as DTB. I remember Go for Wand's final race as well as the great Ruffian and am not ashamed to say that it touches me deeply to see these magnificent animals put down, no matter if they are champions or 5k claimers.

Really happy that you made a couple bucks Pfan

Wow, what a forum full of noble degenerate gamblers, I am humbled to be in your presence.

Let's see if anyone, ANYONE knows what really happened yesterday, or at least should have happened yesterday.

The horse broke through the gate early, does anyone here know what should have happened next? Wait, don't scroll down, post your answer first, let's see if any of you horse race loving, animal loving better than thou types have a ****ing clue, I REALLY don't think so.

Protocal DEMANDS the following take place, ALL the horses should be backed out of the starting gate after your beloved pet and friend broke through the gate, the horse should then be loked at to see if he sustained an injury, walked around to give him time to recover (very important, know why? I doubt it), then if the vet says he's ok to race the horses should then be loaded again in order and the race run as planned.

None of this happened, why? Because if the horse had to be scratched from the race WHICH HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN then the track would have lost millions because of the refunds that would be given, millions and that was never gonna be allowed to happen, never. Not for the sake of you, me, or your beloved horse that none of you ever heard of before the first Saturday in May.

Now, why is any of that important? Because the horse did sustain, even if small, an injury by breaking through the VERY POWERFUL magnetic gates, he, just like you and I would do if we banged our knee compensated for the pain (which no doubt there was) by using more muscle from the back of his body and less from the front, the horse had no chance to win the race, and the track simply risked the health of the horse by allowing him to race, which is what happened.

Now who's the one who didn't give a shit about the horse? Let's say all you geniouses who bet on him at the rediculous price of 1-2 watched him come in 8th, un-injured, what would you be saying now? That they should have scratched him? Yea, probably.

Any other track on any other day this the exact procedure that was supposed to take place would have, it didn't becasue too much money was involved, that's what ruined this horse, not me.

I am done responding to or viewing this thread, you don't know what you are talking about.

The race was farrrrrrr more disturbing to me than Johnnie's funeral. Pretty much put a damper on the rest of the day. I wheeled the horse and could not care less that I lost, it was pretty imaterial to me.
