Can anyone tell me what these Meccas have in common :)

Arizona Tops Nevada to Become Nation's Fastest Growing State

Friday , December 22, 2006

WASHINGTON ? Arizona has ended Nevada's 19-year reign as the nation's fastest-growing state, fueled by immigrants and Americans moving from other states.

At the other end of the scale, Louisiana lost nearly 220,000 people ? more than any other state ? in the year following Hurricane Katrina, according to population estimates released Friday by the Census Bureau.

Arizona led the nation with a population growth rate of 3.6 percent in the past year, followed by Nevada, Idaho, Georgia and Texas.

"There are housing developments sprouting everywhere, whether they are on former farmland or in the desert," said Tom Rex, associate director of the Center for Competitiveness and Prosperity Research at Arizona State University.

The pace of development has strained Arizona's resources and preoccupied local officials, Rex said.

"All they can think about is getting the sewer lines out to the new housing and getting the roads in," he said.

Arizona added about 32,000 immigrants in the past year. It added four times that many people who were relocating from other states. The biggest donor state: California.

"It used to be merely a retirement magnet for Midwest seniors," said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. "Now it's also a front door for immigrants from Mexico and an escape hatch for Californians seeking affordable housing."

The Census Bureau estimates annual state population totals using local records of births and deaths, IRS records of people moving within the United States and census statistics on immigrants. The bureau does not distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants, and most experts believe that the number of illegal immigrants is underestimated.

Among the findings for 2006:

?Texas gained the most people, about 580,000, followed by Florida, California, Georgia and Arizona.

?North Carolina broke into the top 10 in total population, nudging New Jersey to 11th.

?Four states and the District of Columbia lost population: Louisiana, New York, Rhode Island and Michigan.

Many other states lost people who relocated elsewhere in the country, increasing their populations only through births and immigration.

The South had a net gain of a half million people relocating there from other parts of the U.S., while the Northeast had a net loss of 375,000 people and the Midwest lost 184,000, according to the census estimates.

The West added 53,000 people from other parts of the U.S., even though California lost nearly 300,000 people to other states.

Texas passed Florida as the top destination, in part from people fleeing the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Other relatively affordable southern states such as Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee also had significant increases in people moving there from other states.

"Good climate and affordability seem to be the draws for Americans this decade," Frey said.

In the Northeast, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts continued to lose large numbers of people to other states. In the Midwest, the big losers were Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.

Louisiana had been losing people to other states for years before Hurricane Katrina hit, though the storm exacerbated the problem, said Elliott Stonecipher, a veteran Louisiana demographer and pollster. Last year's loss amounted to nearly 5 percent of the state's people.

"The numbers make it clear that Katrina has had an incredibly negative effect," Stonecipher said. "But pre-Katrina, Louisiana was already in trouble."

I know why many go to Texas, Florida, Nevada. Warmer and no state tax. That alone saves many thousands of dollars. How ever it's made up some place for there is no free lunch any place. But a sales tax of 7% vs a state income tax. Those that are smart watch some of there spending can make out ok. Many leaving are old retired folks. And others there jobs have left the country. And that is the sad one.

This trend of moving South and West has been going on since 1950. It's about geography, land costs, climate, and opportunity - although I guess you are implying it has more to do with politics. Once again - I know you are smarter than that, but you seem to have this never-ending need to spin spin spin.

My business is in Las Vegas specifically because of all the growth here. There were only 2 or 3 cities in the country that met the qualifications for what I was starting 10 years ago - they had to be have about a million people, still growing, and not yet with an established competitor.

....Why are you even posting this in the political forum?

I didn't really get the point either, but I guess he's saying that this migration is some sort of mandate of one political ideology or another.

His point will probably backfire in a few years. Nevada was a hardcore red state before the growth started. It's now a battleground state with all trends pointing blue eventually.

for my own curiosity saul if you dont mind me asking, what bnusiness did you start? Yes re: this topic, many moving for weather, cheaper living costs, etc, no question...and the perceived "relaxed life" although those places arent cheap to live in anymore the growth is unreal, I agree in some ways, if a family is struggling in the bronx here or something they figure why not move down to north carolina or florida where its warmer and can maybe buy a house, or to arizona, makes sense, plus the tax stuff.........plus, smart folks who are older get houses in fla,nv,tx and live their enough days to save the tax money yet maintain a home up here, best of both worlds, if you're fortunate enough to live in the northeast/midwest for 1/2 the yr, and az/nev/fla for the other, you're lucky, thats some setup best of both worlds

Hmm no correlation?--just coincidence?

You don't think legislation has any thing to do with making these states so undesirable?

Sad part is--those who made their bed don't have to sleep in it--and are oblivious to what made state so unattractive.

but not so unattractive to all ;)

Sheesh. For one thing, Red Ohio gave W the 2004election and apparently they're fleeing like escapees now. Perhaps because their economy has been on a dismal decline over the last several years.

Michigan is not an automatic blue state.

The other four are.

But more importantly, i'm sure you know what is relevantly correlated?

Those six states you keep putting in bold?

They're northern states. The baby boomers are retiring. They're moving to southern and western states because they are warm states. That's what retirees do. And they are retiring in record numbers, obviously.

You first want to frame it in political terms, then add(edit) in stats on where Muslims live.

If you really think people are moving out of state because of Muslims, then there is really nothing left that I can add.

You talk about what makes those states so 'unattractive?'

It's not the blacks, gays or Muslims. It's the cold and snow.

Period.

Hmmm I didn't there had been such a climite change in past 20 years when these places were so heavily populated--and don't think people are moving out because of Muslims however Muslims are converging on these PC--ACLU strongholds for obvious reasons.

You don't have to be an Einstein to look what is happening in Europe-- compliments of the secular progressives.

If you take of the PC glasses you'll see thats it when-not if -it happens here.

--and if history teaches us anything not to hard to determine where and from who it will occur.

I hate to sound anti Muslim but stastically about 1 in 6 are radicals--I don't personally care to spin the cylinder each day hoping I miss the live round ;)

Probably so they don't get the shit kicked out of them everyday by bigots with guns.

Dogs, I would assume that the Urban areas of these states aren't suffering the same type of migration to the south and west as the rest of state. Also, the migration south and west started when we got a highway system. It's really not that hard to figure out that the reason people are migrating is because of something white, not brown.

There is lots of food for thought in this post.

If it were a mass migration, then I think the answer to your query would be yes; like the waves of sectarian immigrants in the 18th and 19th centuries that fled to the American colonies from Europe to escape religious persecution and economic injustice. To reduce it to the simplest terms: Folks moved away from their enemies to be with their friends (or so they hoped). Those were mass waves of immigration.

However, I don't know, but I think this situation is different. The long term (50 years) trend of population movement from northeast to south and west is not in mass waves, but rather a steady flow.

And if it were politically motivated, wouldn't every "blue" state show the same loss of people? They don't because there are other influences at work.

Also, what type of legislation causes folks to move away? And what other states also share that legislation?

i know at least 10-15 famlies who moved out of the tri state are in the last 3 years, and all for the same reason..real estate..they all sold their houses and made about 200 grand profit.now a few live in better homes than they had in nj ,without a mortgage.it was very tempting to sell a acouple of years ago,but unless you moved out of state ,what are you going to do with your profits...youd be amazed at some of the prices of homes in this area,2 bedroom shitholes are going for 350grand..my taxes alone are 13 grand a year,it was very tempting to sell ,but im not intrested in living anywhere else for now so i stayed put,but many did not.
to many muslims :mj07: if you think thats the reason your a complete idiot.
1 in 6 are terrorists?some people really believe anything they read, somethings i read in here makes you think 1 out of 2 peope in here are complete tools, but that still leaves us with a bunch of smart folks ,of whom i enjoy reading their posts.

Jobs, weather, unions, taxes (inducement by southern and western states to move), infrastructure, cheaper labor (illegals) etc. Now, tell us how, its all because of the democrats and litigation costs that have caused businesses and therefore the population to head south.

As pointed out by BBC, you are a fraud.

kinda off topic...but,did you guys read that the most popular male child`s name in the u.k. is now mohammed, and not george?......

europe will be an islamic state within the next 30 to 40 years.....bank that....

I'd suggest the reason for that is three-fold...

1) Yep. More people/families of Eastern origin migrating to Europe..more specifically I guess, the UK. ***
Logic says the most popular name in the world now for about the last 5 years will spread.

2) Just about everyone who converts to Islam changes either their first or last name to, you guessed it, Mohammed.
So, we're getting a few (more than a few even!) freebies there...

and 3) The diversification of traditional Western names. I mean, who would have ever thought George was a popular name anyway?
How many George's do you know?
These days (oh, sounding like an oldie ;) ) people are more likely to call their children LaMarcus, or DaMont, or Gooseberry Bumblebee...(ok, refaining from smart-arse-ism)...but seriously, now there is such a huge spread of names that no longer does a George, or James, or Christopher (most popular name in Australia from 1975-78 or something silly!) dominate...
...whereas Mohammed does dominate Eastern culture as a name.

Besides, I do like the way you say that Europe will be an Islamic State shortly like it's the end of the world! :D ...would never have expected anything different.

*** Which is funny in itself...I mean, you hate what the '14th century monsters' are doing to their own, yet you still seem to hate the people fleeing from it??

and it`s not easy to blow my skirt up.....

I always thought something was a little different with you, gw.... ;)
As a wise man once said...If you wear a skirt, expect to be blown up :142smilie

Dog.s I don't buy that you believe all your reasons for folks going south and far west. Florida a lone picking up 2000 baby boomers going into retirement a week. It keeps up and Florida may have to start a state tax to run services needed. Or ask more for license plates and up there sales tax. Arizona that did not just start that's been on going since 60's. And California since 50's. If it was about black and brown don't you think a few southern state would be running north or west.
Real estate still brings big bucks in Calf and Road Island, Maryland and parts Of NJ and NY.

I've had basically 3 threads here pertaining to wagering/investments--and unlike your lemmings I don't start them till they go in the red and disappear--in fact I don't put them up for a year if there good and quit the next year if they are bad.
They are up for the duration they were started--you see Edward frauds hide behind keyborads anonomously--change names or what ever.
Good or bad I take responsibilty with total transparency. Find one losing year in the bunch.

Golf forum--going back to 99
Golf thread been going on for years and graded and time stamped by 3rd party--No losing year since inception -- hit 61 % on over 600 plays in 05 Matches-overall 404-254-23 (61%)
I'll put a $100 Neteller in yours and BBC stocking if you can find any capper in any sport in any time period--that hit over 60 % with 600 or more selections given picks were confirmed by 3rd party--timestamped--and ave less than -125 on ml.

So there you go Edward--you got the facts in front of you--are you out of opinions?

P.S. Do you ever get tired of being exposed -you and your lemmings got talking the talk down pat--your just a tad short on walking the walk ;)
Your like a timex--you take a licking and keep on ticking.:)
Merry Christmas!

Good Point, Dogs.

Migration=Liberal policies + abundance of Muslims, therefore Opinion on Migration = Golf Handicapping Skills.

I honestly never looked at it that way
