Last Tuesday, my Mom took a dive from a display stage at Target. In the ER, she was told that she had a fracture in her left femur near the knee and that she should follow up with an orthopaedist in two days. She was sent home via ambulance that same night with Vicoden, an immobilizer and my elderly dad to take full care of her! I went out to Charlotte on Wednesday to try to take some of the burden off them and to go with them to the doctor on Thursday. The orthopedic doc took more x-rays, had her admitted to the hospital and performed surgery on her Friday afternoon.

She displayed a little confusion on the morning before her surgery which concerned me a bit since she had refused any pain medication since the night before. She came through the surgery beautifully but the confusion has become substantially worse. Now she's seeing worms and ants in her food and isn't eating which isn't such a great thing for an 88 pound lady. She's on IV antibiotics but nothing has been diagnosed so far that could be causing it.

My nephew is getting married this Saturday and she won't forgive herself if she can't be there. Please send some of that powerful MadJack's juju down here to Carolina and see if we can get her better before the docs and the hospital kill her! Thanks to all!

My prayers go out to you and your family. I'm sure you have thought of this but just in case, it sounds like the possibility that your mother may have had trauma to her head in the fall. Good luck.

G.W., she's 78 years old and suffers from osteoporosis and COPD, thus not the best candidate for any surgery at this point. We were lucky, however, that they were able to perform the surgery under a sedative and spinal block versus general anesthesia.

Thanks to all for your good wishes! The CAT scan came back negative and Mom seems to be a little clearer today. She's been doing well with her physical therapy and is able to transfer from her bed to a chair or wheelchair with minimal assistance. They plan to discharge her from the hospital tomorrow to home so I'll be heading back down there in the morning.

The doctors feel that she may be suffering from "hospital delirium" that, apparently, isn't that unusual in the elderly. I haven't worked much in the hospital environment and I'm not really familiar with this malady. Hopefully, once she's back in her normal environment, she'll spring back. We appreciate all of the prayers and juju :grouphug: and are hopeful that we'll all be at the wedding come Saturday.
