I have noticed an abundance of pot holes.

Back home (Toronto), potholes after snow melts are covered within 24-48 hours for the really bad ones, its been 3 days here and some very major potholes are still visible.
WTF michigan?
:0corn

Is your area like this as well?

I've been hitting the same pothole on my way to work for the last year and a half.

I like to think of Cincinnati as the pothole of middle-America.

Anthony, Roads, bridges, tunnels, beaches, everything in this country needs work badly. Money to treat these infrastructure has gone to other places like Iraq:shrug:

Dr. you can blame the b*tch down the street from you. Since Granholm can't bring any money into the state, funding for stuff like the roads is dissappearing.

Hopefully Archer will run next election and do for the state what he briefly did for detroit.

Michigan has, by far, the worst roads. If you ever drive the roads that connect to Ohio or Indiana, you'll notice a HUGE difference once you cross the state line. I've long thought that the auto companies and the State of Michigan are in bed together....bad roads = more repairs = more new car purchases.

Good point, now that the snow has cleared, it is awful out there, especially here in Lansing.

come down to Chicago to see some real pot holes. They completely give up on fixing them during the Winter. Its a ploy by the City government to get more money from the State to fix the roads that double as state highways/roads.

shit they don't fix the roads here in SF, and it doesn't even snow here.

Government is a joke. You'd think there would be a way for unions to skim lots of money fixing roads.

Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin had a HUGE PR push for this there back when I lived there. She set up a hotline and "guaranteed" that a pothole would be filled within 24 (or 48, I can't remember) hours after one was reported.

The problem up north is that salt application breaks roads down.

Money for potholes going to Iraq? That's funny.

dawg, although Anthony mentioned potholes, my post mentioned infrastructure, Roads, bridges, tunnels etc. if you don't think, infrastructure could have been improved, and hence suffered with the allocation of trillions of dollars to Iraq, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe you have to see a few more bridges fall and kill more people.

In any case, if you read my sentence, didn't mention potholes & Iraq.:nono:

How much infrastructure for a particular city (reason of this post) is the responsibility of the federal government?

Interstate system (and the bridges on them) is federal responsibility.

But a city's infrastructure should be the city's responsiblity; then the state's; then, if a federal emergency is determined, the federal government could step in.

well exactly, Anthony s point was potholes in Lansing. I was just adding, in addition to potholes, the Roads bridges tunnels throughout the entire country are in bad shape, some desperate. Floods throughout the country have stressed dams and bridges, that haven't been assessed and reviewed for decades.
Most cities are strapped, and therefore AREN'T being helped by the federal government, because the federal government is strapped.

My uncle has a very unique epoxy paint machine that is one of only a few in the country that are used to paint lines on federal highways. He is generally away for months at a time, and has painted highways from Maine to Florida, TX to Alaska. Believe me, money is not going into infrastructure. Highways bridges dams etc. etc. are in poor condition. Cities like Detroit, Flint, Youngstown, Akron Toledo Lansing, and dozens others, certainly don't have money kicking around for Roads, and the Feds don't have money to help out.

That's my only point, lots of money that could have gone to very needing infrastructure, + home land security here in the states, immigration etc. etc. has been utilized in Iraq, whether it's right or wrong.

I just think that could always be said.

Some money spent could have gone somewhere else.

I don't know about bridges collapsing, but our interstate system does not seem to be in disarray. I don't have first-hand experience beyond driving, though.

Many of the areas that you mentioned (MI and OH) are being hit very hard by the current state of one industry. They relied heavily on that industry and leaned on it pretty hard for a very long time. Now, due to faults of both the corporate management and abuse of unions those areas are showing some glaring signs of weakness.

Why should my federal dollars go to bailing that out?

I want my federal government to be in charge of what they are supposed to.

In my opinion, this is federal interstate system and defense.

Education, infrastructure, etc. should be handled at state level or below.

I didn't mean to offend you. My comment was only that from reading this thread, I laughed at the idea of money that should be spent on potholes is going to Iraq. Come on, shamrock. that's pretty funny. <not saying you said that directly>

Happy Monday, everyone! :00hour
