Same thing happened last month when ESPN used a Spanish language telecast for a WBC game.

Also last year the Capitals Joel Ward was the subject of vile racism on twitter after he scored a game winning goal against the Boston Bruins.

Why perpetuate it by posting? Just adds to the morally repulsive drivel for everyone to see. People like that love it when you keep it going.

Well, I can think of three other options:

1) Ignore it and pretend that it doesn't exist - which clearly does not work.

2) Ignore it and hope that it goes away - which I believe is your suggestion, also appears as though it won't work either.

3) Just let it be - which isn't an option at all.

Peace! :)

Looks mostly like kids, if you squint at the profile pics.
Don't expect kids on twitter to be insightful or polite.

And Pearl Harbor? That's less racist and more "I only know 3 things about American History and this is an opportunity to mention one of them"

Absolutely agree with you.

But isn't it problematic that they're even learning/being subjected to/picking up/internalizing this type of mindset in the first place?

Where does it stem from?

Shouldn't we try to completely eradicate it? Or at least address it somehow?

Peace! :)

I don't know. It's just as possible these kids actual behavior is just fine and they just say stupid shit on twitter. I don't remember growing up with racism or having particularly racist thoughts. But I am sure at some point on amongst friends I said one or two racist things. I probably thought it was funny or edgy or just didn't think at all.
Didn't mean I needed additional education or anything. Just meant I needed to grow up, which humans tend to do.

The one "takeaway" from this stuff is to remind kids that the things they do on the internet far outlast the predictable growth in their behavior.

True.

But I'm also starting to believe (more and more) in a distinct (maybe higher) correlation between one's immediate surroundings and the culture of tolerance/intolerance that one is subjected to as a child.

Peace! :)

I think there is much validity to this. The Stuebenville Ohio rape case is a prime example, how many teens were passing on photos (and the infamous video) and treating it as a joke.

Living in a free country allows these idiots to say and feel how they wish. There have always been racists, and there always will be; stupidity is compounded by social media because it is so apparent.

When I was a kid people wrote letters. You could phone others, but the long distance was so expensive, it wasn't always the best option. Now if a kid or anybody has a thought, it goes on twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Vine, YouTube, etc.

What is the solution? I don't think a battle of "wits" on any social media outlet is productive. I'm at a loss really. I know it's wrong. I can correct my children and rear them in a non-racist household, and hopefully they will continue that.

I think it is truly pathetic how xenophobia resounds so strongly in this country and how far removed that is from our founding fathers. Don't get me started on education and how stupid so many are in the subject of history. It is so truly pathetic how ungrateful and ignorant many Americans are regarding the past sacrifices and accomplishments of their ancestors and fellow Americans. American kids know who Kim Karsashian is knocked up by, but they don't know anything (correct) about the American Civil War.
