(CNN) -- A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck Northern California early Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
It was the strongest to hit the Bay Area since 1989, when a quake struck during the World Series.
Sunday's earthquake struck 4 miles northwest of American Canyon, 6 miles southwest of Napa, and 9 miles southeast of Sonoma, according to the USGS.
CNN affiliate KTVU reported a church in Vallejo was heavily damaged and lost its bell tower.
There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Pittsburgh, Pa.
I remember where I was when the quake struck the Bay area in 1989.

I was twelve miles east of Pittsburgh, Pa. standing on a ladder hanging dry wall watching the NLCS game.

The picture on the tv screen shook back and forth like someone or something moved the camera.

I remember one of the announcers saying, "What was that?"

My niece was in one of the last cars to exit the Oakland Bay Bridge before it collapsed.

Yeah I was playing Nintendo before the game started. The TV and game went black before I even felt it. My mom was in the toilet, my dad was in the yard, remember it all like it was yesterday.

This, was not even CLOSE in feeling to that. In fact I was discussing with a friend, that a 5.0ish one we had a few years ago felt much stronger. Could be that I was a fair bit drunker than normal tonight vs. other quakes Ive felt!

Back then we were without power for a day or so, and school was cancelled for 3 days. Which was big news for kids in an area that never 'enjoys' snow days.

we had one on the east coast a few years back...not big(by cali standards)..but things shook....luckily,I had just come down off the roof...was in the basement and I heard the furnace rattling....

weird thing is my neighbor told me(months later) her dog went a little crazy about 20 seconds before the tremor...was she exaggerating?...who knows....interesting though...

The dog thing killed me as a young kid. When I first read about some animals being able to sense the waves a few seconds before humans feel shaking it made me a nervous wreck. I was already a little scared of dogs as a youngster, and now every time I heard a dog barking loudly I assumed a big earthquake was incoming.

This truly is a tragedy of mass proportions. That is a weeks worth of loss at Wineguys house......sucks

:popcorn2

It's almost funny: they were parading some low level local government bureaucrats in front of news cameras and 50% of what they were talking about were the wineries. No doubt who pays the bills up in Napa.

This is fairly interesting. An early warning system that alerted people 10 seconds in advance of the shaking at the UC Berkeley geological lab. Would be interesting to see how they could pass this info along to citizens.

I remember working when the Northridge quake struck. I was in Camarillo. Thought I would end up under a avalanche of cans but didn't happen. The store did lose about 10,000$ in damage. Oddly enough the liquor section was the worst hit.

We get amber alerts on our cell phones and they are loud as shit. I wonder if they could do the same-
