Question about Indians

All over the U.S. there are convenience stores and it seems to me that about 70% are owned and or operated by indians.

My question is.........what is it about convenience stores that attracts indians?

Even The Simpson's have a stereotypical indian running the local convenience store.

Is there any explanation to this?

Just a guess but given the tax(or lack thereof) incentive these are some of the "easiest" things to run. No need for formal training, people skills, or education. You rarely ever see a convenient store go under, and passing it around the family tree seems very easy.

About 1/3 to 1/2 of all stores in the US are owned by Pakistanis or Indians...you don't need to speak to much english,prices are marked.If you have the right spot the recession doesn't effect them..people need milk,bread,lotto,coffee,newspapers, gas,etc...they all work within their own famlies...and sell to each other...expand...a lot of gas stations also....

Greeks own 95% of every diner in NY...Albanians are buying from Italians opening up pizzeria's all over NY....cab drivers in NYC are from every country in the United nations...

In Michigan, arabs own all the convenience stores and gas stations. I've heard Koreans own a bunch in NY and/or California. Probably a low barrier to entry. A lot of the vendors handle the ordering so you just make sure they keep taking care of you.

B/c its a good business opportunity ..

My uncle, who is a broker, bought one about a year ago

It provides family moving from India a job and keeps the cost of labor down by keeping the business in the family

They are extremely smart and only do it b/c it can be very lucrative..
They are mostly first generation Indians , so it will be interesting to see whether the kids born here will take over the business or venture out on their own

On a side note, hedgey, when I'm older, and my parents will need a little assistance, I'm going to make sure they are taken care of, whether that means they live in home or I buy a home very close to me...Never understood how people could just dump their parents off in a home and only visit them once or twice a year

they live with them b/c of culture/tradition, not money

families that live with kids and vice versa b/c of money reasons spans across all races/nationalities
