Flecther:

I hope you don't mind me posting this question in an open forum. If so, then you can either ignore it, or reply by e-mail if you prefer.

Several months ago, we were involved in a thread about the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste site. You commented at the time that you were so concerned about the federal government making Nevada into a dump that you were contemplating moving out of Las Vegas and/or out of state. I don't recall the specifics of what you said, but I seem to remember you saying you might leave LV.

First of all, is this true and do you still feel this way?

No doubt, there has been more news and press in the RJ and Sun about the dangers and I am eager to hear if your thoughts have changed on the subject.

Second, how would your move from LV fit with your sportsbetting? I presume (perhaps wrongly) that you bet locally. Or, do you use offshores?

Finally, as someone who has lived in LV and been successful at sportsbetting -- do you believe living in LV as a professional sports handicapper is a positive or negative? From my own perspective, I prefered to be in LV during baseball season because of access of information that was not always available outside of LV (this was before there were hundreds of websites). However, with the NFL, I prefer to be outside of LV because the time away from gambling helps me to focus and concentrate on the games better. Obviously, you have great talent and discipline. I'd be very interested (as would readers) in your perspective.

Thanks.

well first off would leave for new smyrna beach fl in a heart beat, but if i did that i would be going alone ,so have to wait it out for 5-8 more years maybe, you just don't leave someone you been with for 6 years. we have no truma center the 4th busiest one in the us shut doors wen.

now the waste coming after the vote today,if it is so safe why not bury it in the mts of virginia or maryland i will tell you why because the congress and other people that work in dc don't want it there because they don't know if it is safe, why did they note put it in the midwest where they were going to deep in the ground in a missle silo? its because nv has 1.5 cities and 6-8 towns and that is it. i have read and listened to many on this and i donot know if it is safe or not but really don't want to find out.

the feds shouldnot be able to force state goverenment to take and do things they donot feel is in the best intrest of that state. if they are the almighty why can't they force the insurence compinies to cut the nv dr.s a brake and open back up the 4th busiest lev 1 truma center in the us hell they stong armed us to take toxic waste but when it comes to saving a life they won't get involved? so much for the golden hour it takes 2 hours to air lift to az phx. this whole city is screwed.

as far as handicapping i learned a lot i feel when i first started from being here, but get lot of my info from other places besides some of the people here. yes you can find some good help by just being at a few places and watching a few people to see what they do and learn who they are doing it for and not even have to say a word just listen, also have people here i talk to that we would drift if i left to go back east but i use both vegas and offshore, vegas is good for steady cash flow and offshore for good numbers. but with laptop i can work anywhere i prefer to do my work alone and put games in then i start to read some veiw points,if not my head would spin as long as i manage my money i can do this anywhere but not with the ease as out here.

would it effect me yes but very little because like i said i get my info and know what i am looking for and why from other sources besides gamblers.

but who knows could be yellow or green in a few months or bleed to death because of stupid ass attorneys who live to sue and greedy insurence compines that force me or anyone else to be flown to phx or la unreal. this state is in piss poor shape.

i would miss the boxing and shows the most anything else i can live without, also late night black jack comes in good also would miss that. but anything else would be much better off but she has been in her field for 17 years out here and has her plans all set up 22-24 years and out by 52 and done so it would not even be a thought to her she has it set up and it will be done so i either go on my own or wait it out, which looks like that is what i will do,not easy to leave a partner after 6-7 years so i will sit with a bullseye on me and just wait for something to go wrong and if luck runs good with the waste will be long gone by 98-99 at the latest now thats a hell of a gamble.

Congress Approves Yucca Nuclear Project

Jul 9, 6:41 pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate gave final congressional approval on Tuesday to President Bush's decision to bury deadly nuclear waste from across the nation in Nevada's Yucca Mountain, setting aside the state's safety concerns that will be heard in federal court challenges.
Senators approved a resolution -- previously passed by the House of Representatives -- to override Nevada's veto of the administration's plan to put the country's first permanent nuclear waste repository in the Nevada desert, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas. The action effectively clears the way for the U.S. Energy Department to apply to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to license the $58 billion project, scheduled to open in 2010 and hold 77,000 tons of radioactive material.

The state of Nevada has already filed suits in federal court to try to stop it, and will take its case to the NRC that despite administration claims to the contrary, Yucca Mountain is an unsafe site for a nuclear dump.

I went to California this last week and stopped for a few days in vegas...........I have not been there since 1990 and to be honest I was very dissapointed in the sports betting. It seemed like all the sportbooks are smaller and really have gone downhill. I remember it being exciting to walk into a sportsbook but not this time. A friend of mine says the books only want to take the tourists bets and no more. All the good betters have moved offshore, better lines, 20 cents line compared to .08 lines, better limits.....who can blame them. I think the internet, new regulations, corporations and offshore books have really changed Vegas. Why use up valuable space in the casinos on sportsbooks when you can put slots in and make more money without the potential risk.

Thanks for the answers Fletcher. I appreciate your perspective on things.

I am outraged about the Yucca Mountain decision, and President Bush's bold-faced lie to the citizens of Nevada.

Now, not only is there a health crisis in LV -- there are water issues and the danger of nuclear waste material.

Really scary.

Is it ironic to anyone but myself that the Republicans, who have historically been champions of states rights and smaller govt, have done a 180 this past year?

Yucca Mountain and naming everything in this city after Ronald Reagan are two that come to mind.

As far as Yucca Mt goes, I am not sure there is really any good place to put it. I come from a small town in NH and years back they wanted to put a dump there to house waste from Seabrook Nuclear Plant. Sure there were people around, but not many. Of course I was against it for the NIMBYish reason that none of you would want it in your town. And while I am not necessarily against Yucca Mt, I am against the govt telling Nevada what to do over their wishes. I mean who the Christ knows if a 8.5 earthquake may or may not rupture the entire thing? You think the scientists making a govt salary and govt focus groups really could tell what would happen in that situation? No chance lance they know what would happen.

I hope it works out well. Nuclear power only accounts for 20% of the energy produced in this country and I feel that needs to increase. We still derive over 70% of our power from fossil fuels which is in my opinion unacceptable given that much of that is imported from the Middle East.

Well said, Phil (Ace). I could not have put it better myself.

I too, am a big proponent of nuclear energy. And, I understand that the waste must be placed SOMEWHERE. My anger stems from two things:

.....Candidate Bush lying to the voters of Nevada when he was running for President, then doing a 180 on this issue as President. Bush has essentially said FVCK YOU to the citizens of Nevada after the state gave him their support (by a surprsingly wide margin, I might add). As someone who supported the Republican Party for 20 years, I am astonished that this man is President. He's dumb, he can't communicate a clear vision, he has no concept of how the federal system works, his foreign policy is nothing but contradictions, he has no concept nor understanding of civil liberties, is opposed to campaighn finance reform, and is essentially doing everything contrary to what Conservatives once stood for (less government, state's rights, etc.). He is a liar and a hypocrite. He would be downright evil, if he were not so lost in a fog.

.....The federal government DICTATING to Nevada that it must follow its mandate, even though it places over a million lives in jeopardy. Hey, if this nuclear material is so SAFE, why not store it in Kansas (the middle of the country where it must be trucked in). Answer -- Washington and Nevada are as different as night and day and politicians love to stick it to the citizens of the Silver State. Washington wants power and will do everything it can to control people's lives and their pursestrings. Nevandans are fiercely independent and demand low taxes and little or no government intervention into their daily lives.

I'm ready for the revolution.

While I dont want the Strip lit up in radioactive waste, I guess the argument would go like this. We agree, I think, that the waste has to go somewhere, on Earth. We have to find a place that it can be stored which impacts the least amount of citizens in X square miles, while at the same time impacting as little environment as possible. Does that sound right?

That being said, the desert is as close to a remote, less-impacted location as I can think of. Notice I say less impacted, I am not saying it would not be impacted at all. I am certainly no scientist (unless you count a minor in Astrophysics). So what to do? I myself have not studied the Yucca region in much detail, although I certainly will start to. I cant really think of any place else that is as sparsely populated, unless maybe you talk about the middle of the Texas outback.

Nolan do you recall what ever it was you said to Kosar. I see any time you have something to say he beats you up as fast as he can. Everyone who voted for Bush do it next time to. But say you did, don't run and hide. There is no oil business in that waste. So Bush's promise is mute. Yes Senate has something to say. But Bush has the veto. Lets see how is the market doing today. For chit again.

My suggestion is to put the waste site at Gitmo, with the other wastes.

Does anyone know the distance from the site to the nearest city or town ?

They are really dumping on Nevada between the waste site & the gambling bill that is trying to be passed.Maybe with this site, they will vote against any gambling bill.
