I'm not a Duke fan by any stretch of the imagination, but here is a "dislike" I don't agree with:

I dislike that his players tend to major in the same subject, and that some have graduated in only three years -- an eyebrow-raising achievement considering the academic reputation of Duke and the time constraints on players.

I'll use Jay Williams as an example here. He was a good enough player to leave one of the premier programs in the nation to go to the NBA early. Do we really care what his degree is in? If he manages his money at all, he can live comfortably and not have to worry about using that degree in a nine to five setting. As for questioning Duke's academic standards and him getting out in three years, I'd imagine he took summer courses every year and basically didn't go home for an extending time while he was attending Duke.

Besides the obvious intimidation of officials most probably haven't heard of the bad things .... I did know a bit about the Corey Maggette/Myron Piggie thing as that was big news here in KC regarding Jaron Rush as well .... you have to admire his success & ability to attract top players year after year but still can't stand corporal K and the preferential treatment Duke receives.

Blachman I think (but dont know) the point is that generally the "academic" aspects of the players is overstated because they are getting the athelete preferential degree plan. at least that is the implication.

granted it is better than Cincy's "undergraduate studies," and the degree would be in PE and it is better than what 60% of scholarship atheletes in Dvision 1 accomplish

But it isnt like they have a high grad rate in Bio Medical Sciences or AstroPhysics as you might think listening to the pundits

I can't really understand all the Duke hating that goes on everywhere just cause they are the most successful program these days.

They graduate players, the players are generally pretty good kids (not thugs or criminal types if they were not playing b-ball I mean)

As for the refs favoring them ... I don't even know if it's a truity but even if it is ... it's not Duke's fault. Every coach wants to get the calls. Blame the refs not the coach or the players.

I generally root for undersdogs except for my hometown favorite teams (Eagles, Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, Penn State, and the Big 5) but I personally like and respect Duke, coach K and there entire program.

GO DUKE!

After reading that article on Duhon and his family I think alot of that must go on in college basketball for the top recruits.

They have to have some way to hide the money paid to them. What better way than to give the family of the players jobs and cars etc.

If Duke don't do it UConn will.

Don't kid yourself guys. These activities take place at just about every major D1 school out there. I won't comment on what takes place but I know for a fact that illegal transactions and extracurriculars transpire with student athletes. It's a hush hush thing. ;)

All just a coincidence Sun ... Duhon, Boozer, etc... just everyday coincidences. ;)

Actually, I agree with F Monk ... this stuff takes place everywhere but I think Duke is still cleaner than most but I agree they are no saints. Same goes for Penn State these days more so than ever. Of course, maybe Joe Pa is not offering good enough jobs or vehicles anymore cause we seem to be on a quick and steady decline.

Maybe we need to drop our standards to get better ***** athletes ... oops ... no, that's the holier than though Notre Dame.

Those are the pricks I dislike most!

I don't doubt it occurs everywhere. My point was can we all (especially the media) drop the "Coach K for sainthood" theme?

I hope people don't let personal feelings affect their ability to handicap a game.

I think there are many more important things to direct real hatred towards. Why ever put mayonaisse on a burger? I HATE California!:thefinger

Uh oh ... what kind of vehicle is LaMarcus Aldridge driving these days. I am betting it's something like a big Caddy with Horns on the front. :D

And his daddy, if he has one, will be working at one of the oil companies in no time.

Damn, those Dukkies need some oil wells in North Carolina.

"something like a big Caddy with Horns on the front."

LOL, I used to want one of those as a kid after watching Boss Hogg pimp his caddy in Dukes. :)

I'll give you a couple of more exploits on how to hide money. As it has been noted before, I had a full tuition schloarship for hoops and I worked numerous bball camps in the summer. Well, one of the camps had a very prominent player that played for UNC and I knew him well enough to discuss this type of thing....

Here is the deal, these big time schools all run bball camps throughout the summer and most of their players in some way shape or form work these camps. While the rest of us low echelon players made 250 per week, the rest big time players were getting something like 5000 or more. One way around it.

Here is number two. My meal money for home games was something like 10 and away without stay 15, with stay 25 per day. Big fu-king deal, I had to take my own money just to get a happy meal at McDonald's which it seemed we ate at every day. God, I can't stand that place. There were times when he said they got around 1000 for long road games or trips. If they played one of those say Maui Invitationals, look out enough dough to live off for months.

I am sure there are other ways, but these were some of the things I could think when I was there and playing a little over 10 years ago.

jr11:

youre right. lots of ways to get extra money. having also been around it myself- have seen excessive room/board payments given to guys. if they live off campus and rent is say 200 bucks a person, theyll get checks for 500 or 600 bucks that are "supposed" to pay rent. of course 200 goes to that, but the excess money is theirs to spend.

camps are a joke as well. whether it be working a station or being a guest speaker saying all of five sentences- the payments are absurd. but thats because they rape the kids and high school coaches by charging obscene amounts of money to begin with.
