Did you really read this? I did back in college for a class.

Saint,

Yes, read it this past year. Loved it. Gave me a much deeper appreciation for evolution. I didnt buy his arguments in the middle of the book. He gets a bit liberal with his use of "chance" but I enjoyed the rest of the book.

Finished John Daly's bio, always liked the guy, decent read and NEVER would have guessed thaat "Big" John is a nympho:mj07:

Bow reading "Big Games" about the 10 best college rivalry histories. Being a Bama fan, had to read the Iron Bowl chapter first. Obviously a little biased but has to be the most heated rivalry.

Had a piece on Lee Roy Jordan, possibly the best linebacker ever, once had 31 tackles in one game against Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl:scared

Tales from Q School is a good one I just read...

I just finished it but didn't think it lived up to my expectations.

Al: I read Bringing Down the House and really liked it. Blew through it during SuperBowl weekend in Vegas.

Here's an update of books I've recently read and highly recommend.....

1776 - David McCullough
Under the Banner of Heaven - Jon Krakauer
The Omnivore's Dilemma - Michael Pollan
Prisoner of Trebekistan: A Decade in Jeopardy! - Bob Harris

I'm going to try to track down that one about the election between Jefferson and Adams. After seeing the HBO special on Adams, I'm ready for it.

The End of Faith
The Mind of Bill James
The Tipping Point
Freakonomics
Prisoner of X
One of a Kind
Moneyball

I have a goal each year to read and/or listen to the audio for 18 books per year.

The Tipping Point is an interesting read, but I think his statements of how to get to the tipping point on fads are primarily BS. It's easy to say why something became a fad AFTER the fad was successful. Many of the more interesting parts of the book are skimmed over while others that could generate hype were overdone. With all of this being said, it was a decent book.

Freakonomics is fantastic. I love the portions on parenting but the whole is simply "interesting"! Great stuff.

Moneyball was better than average.

What I have read recently that's worth mentioning:

(Currently) Way of the Turtle by Curtis Faith
(Currently) Mavericks at Work by Taylor and Polly Labarre

Made to Stick by Chip and Dan Heath -- this book is really great and a must read for someone who is trying to spread the word about their company and/or product

Outside Innovation - the subject covered in this book is at the peak of my interest right now, but the book failed miserably to deliver. If anyone has read anything on this subject that they liked, list it here.

Word of Mouth Manual Vol. II by Dave Balter - good, quick read on getting word of mouth to spread. It's really more about your company being worthy of talking about.

Your Child's Strengths by Jenifer Fox - this was a follow-up for a book from one of my favorite business authors, Marcus Buckingham. It was a great twist on his ideas and models but relating it to work and home life.

Best investing book I've ever read is Trade Your Way to Financial Freedom. Despite the AWFUL title, it's basic premise is about the emotional side of trading. No matter your investing/trading methods or systems, they simply can not be effective (unless lucky) without being in the right place emotionally for whatever market you deal in.

Anyone read Guns, Germs, and Steel? Wondering if it's worth the time investment.

The Real Story behind Thomas Jefferson vs. Aaron Burr vs. Alexander Hamilton

This is a must watch video! Completely unscripted and this was the original. Classic! :142smilie :142smilie

Guns, Germs and Steel was pretty good.

Last 2 I read were
Voltaire's Bastard--The Dictatorship of Reason in the West by John Ralston Saul,
and
The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, for the second time. My P.O.S. memory refuses to provide me with the author. Same guy who wrote the Two Cultures, philosopher of science. Dagnabbit memory hole.

About to start What Would Jefferson Do.
Forget the author there, too.

Two of my all-time favorites are Einstein's collections of essays. Out of My Later Years and The World As I See It.
Also really enjoyed Becker's The Denial of Death, which won a Pulitzer back in the 70's.
Roger Penrose's The Emporer's New Mind was also very good, but about the most difficult read I've ever experienced (theoretical physics with plenty of calculus throughout).

Structure of Scientific Revolutions is by Kuhn, Thomas is the first name, I think.

Decent, fairly easy read, anywho.
Covers the distinction between deductive and inductive reasoning pretty well, which was my concern on the second reading.

I mentioned John Ralston Saul and I would recommend pretty much anything by this Canadian PhD in history. On Equilibrium, for example, was a very good read.

chit...I should be reading more presently but baseball season always seems to be a down time for me doing such.

Hendrix grant me the power to become published before I turn freakin' 50.

I'm sure that weirder things have happened.
