Realistically, what do you think you could shoot at Torrey Pines?

TIGER WOODS has been forced to eat his words by a couple of amateurs at Torrey Pines.

Woods scoffed last year at Oakmont that no regular golfer could break 100 on a course set up so tough for the US Open.

Golf Digest decided to test his theory, choosing John Atkinson (39), a medical salesman from Omaha from 57,374 amateurs, to play this year's US Open venue, Torrey Pines, in a celebrity fourball.

Though Atkinson, a six-handicap, shot 114 (43-over par), two of his playing companions, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, a 2.2 handicap, and singer Justin Timberlake, who plays off six, both broke 100.

Romo got around the longest course in US Open history in 84, while Timberlake took 98.

Tiger said that no 10-handicapper could break a 100!
I play to a 6 and think I'd have a legitimate shot at doing it.

I think they said Atkinson was a recovering cancer patient... I think Timberlake's score is pretty telling for your normal 6 handicap on a US Open set-up course...

My dad (3 handicap) played Torrey Pines last year and shot upper 80s.. obviously not the same set-up as a US Open, but my dad played in a US Senior Amateur a couple years ago and is a consistent player.. He said there were one or two par 4s that he had trouble reaching in two shots..

Would be curious age of your father? Your report would seem very accurate to me on consistant golfer such as you describe your father.
The key is as your father said--reaching long par 4's. Open set-up makes this very difficult with double wammy of lenthening tees and firmer greens. Makes it much tougher as you not only have to have length but be able to hit long irons quite high to hold greens. We have course I spoke about in other thread here that is always set to U.S. standards per rough and fast greens -plays 7400 yards from tips and host the world 2008 Jr ryder cup this year. The course is an absolute bear.
When put on tips I ave 20 bout strokes diff from regular course I play.
The prob is reaching and staying on the par 4's and brutal rough when you don't.
My thoughts on breaking 100 at Torrey on open set up would be a toss-up.

DOGS -

Dad turned 60 this year.. he is not long off the tee (245-250 yds) but is deadly accurate.. has five or six hole-in-ones to his credit and hits a pin seemingly every 2 or 3 rounds..... hes a typical senior club championship winner who won a state amateur in his younger years along w/ a couple runner-up finishes in state opens.... hes an absolute golf freak --- loves the game as much or more than anyone i know..

I know there was at least one par 4 that he couldnt reach in two (forget which hole) at Torrey Pines...

He takes a business trip to Pinehurst every year and shoots low 80s.. Also has played Pebble and Oakmont.... shot 84 at Pebble and low 90s at Oakmont (about two months before last years Open)... hes said Oakmont is bar none the toughest.

Getting carried away, sorry..... love ur posts. - raw

In Open conditions, I think I would be lucky to shoot 120.

Only about 49 or so shots worse than agent would.

and I wanna play this agent guy... He's pretty cocky so I've heard... who is he?

I bet he can't hit it out of his shoes w/ a monstrous banana slice? :mj07:
