Realistically, what do you think you could shoot at Torrey Pines?

DOGS -

Dad turned 60 this year.. he is not long off the tee (245-250 yds) but is deadly accurate.. has five or six hole-in-ones to his credit and hits a pin seemingly every 2 or 3 rounds..... hes a typical senior club championship winner who won a state amateur in his younger years along w/ a couple runner-up finishes in state opens.... hes an absolute golf freak --- loves the game as much or more than anyone i know..

I know there was at least one par 4 that he couldnt reach in two (forget which hole) at Torrey Pines...

He takes a business trip to Pinehurst every year and shoots low 80s.. Also has played Pebble and Oakmont.... shot 84 at Pebble and low 90s at Oakmont (about two months before last years Open)... hes said Oakmont is bar none the toughest.

Getting carried away, sorry..... love ur posts. - raw

Sounds like your pop and I are like two peas in a pod on enthusiam--except your father is much better player--quite a pedigree of accomplishments in the amatuer arena--I am sure you are quite proud of him--and justly so. I enjoyed your report on him--thanks

On the course!
Think about a few things you haven't, you 10 handicappers:

You wouldn't have 30,000 people to find your ball for you when you hit it in 5" rough. I think we would be going back to "hit another" with a stroke and distance penalty quite a bit out there.

But, even if that was not an issue, and you could find every ball, how many of you guys have dealt with 5" hay before? The rough on your typical muni is what? 2 and a half inches?

Now, figure that you hit a wedge or 9 iron into the par fours at home, and here you're smashing 7 or 6 irons if you catch a good drive?

Next, you are putting on greens, the likes of which you have never seen. Birdies will pretty much be a dream, and three and four putts, the norm.

Many of the guys last week hit LESS than 50% of the greens in regulation. If we assume you have a "10 handicapper's day" out there, and hit five greens, and putt as I assume you would on those greens, three putting about 10 holes, one putting about 2, and the rest of your day goes perfect.......you would shoot around 94

The thing is.....You can add AT LEAST one stroke for each time you hit into that hay. That's not even thinking about the other trouble you'll find. (Bunkers, trees, and so on.)

Just a guess, though.

Rather astute observations there yyz....but if I were facing this challenge, I think wearing a Steve Stricker Fairway Sport Navy Vest would neutralize every one of those obstacles.

I've thought many times before that I would love to see some of the pros play at a muni instead of vice versa (hacker playing a top tier course). I think it would be incredibly enjoyable to see them hit out of mud/bare ground, sandtraps in terrible condition, not being able to find a ball in the middle of the fairway, greens that have huge mold spots, etc. Add the stress the local hack has of...

1) constantly trying to find their own ball since there isn't a marshall at every shot with a flag sticking up.

2) playing behind and in front of idiots who are slow and will pick up your ball if it's near them.

3) putting on greens that are in far less than perfect shape and in worse shape than the fairways they usually play (not to mention covered with unrepared ball marks or even dead areas, rocks, blight, etc.).

4) postage stamp greens that will not hold any ball no matter how perfectly hit.

5) tee areas that are sloped, devoid of grass, covered with huge divots that are never repaired, etc.

I'm sure I'll think of many more things I've encountered hacking around that I can't recall now.

Can you imagine some elite pu$$y like Colin Montgomerie playing on a course like this where he has no entourage to find his ball in a leaf covered fairway :mj07: ? How about his cart partner driving 30 mph (after removing the governer switch :mj07: ), flying over hills, bag slamming, his body being jarred, hitting his head on the cart's ceiling :mj07: :scared

At Torrey Pines, I think I could shoot 40 over par.

I played Torrey Pines about 13-14 years ago, on a regular weekend setup - nothing like an Open setup. At the time I was playing quite a bit and had a 10 handicap, I played pretty well until it started raining some. I think I shot 88 that day. I doubt I could shoot better than 110 on an Open setup there...I have trouble with rough (weaker iron player than with woods), and would guess the greens would give me fits.

If a touring pro came to your local course, he would challange the course record, with ease.

Had several hooter events on local course Hartland i play often (just finish 18 holes bout hour ago)
-- 1st year before they move tees back one of the Pappas boys shot 59--played 2 more events following years and believe 63 was lowest shot--on the monster down the road I discussed prior- Kenny Perry played it 5 times before he broke par and had course record of 70--don't know if it's been broken or not--believe his son Justin who plays there often has tied it--Holmes played it few days before we did last week and caddy said he shot 76.

You probabaly get tired of hearing bout the monster but have a look--a jewel sitting in middle of nowhere--

"Most recently Olde Stone was named the No. 8 Best New Private Course in 2007 by Golf Digest, and Golfweek placed the course at No. 33 on its annual "Top 100 Residential Golf Courses" list. Olde Stone will be hosting the Jr. Ryder Cup in September 2008."

Thats obscene YYZ--luckily they let you choose which tees you play -I fancy the green-could live with the blue--but black would be out of the question.

I've played this course twice. From the tee's we played from it was a little over 7000 yards. All I remember is that I was exhausted by around the 15th hole.

I mean tired. This course beat the living shi t outta me both times. The wind, conditions, length, everything just kicked my skinny, liberal ass. The real frustration was hitting a good drive (for me) on a par four and still having a fairway wood to the green.

Toughest course I've ever played. Neat to watch the same holes played by the pro's that I played though.
