I think it's more like a lot of gay and lesbian people, some with their families, who are at the beach for a good time. There are about 200 gay-owned businesses, several gay bars and the places that are considered "straight" are gay-friendly.
I only posted the disclaimer because I'd hate to see someone who's really conservative and uptight being uncomfortable with a same sex couple walking the boardwalk hand-in-hand or with their arms around one another. It might be particularly uncomfortable for them to try to explain it to their little ones as well.
I don't think it's so "in your face" as some other places as long as you don't go during Pride weekend in mid-September. If it's anything like DC's Pride Festival, it might get crazy!! LOL!
It is also more family friendly than Ocean City (MD), with fewer rowdy college kids and high schoolers out drinking their first beers if you know what I mean. If you and your wife are going with another couple, you should have a good time. If you're at all uncomfortable, stay away from Poodle Beach and click on the FunMaps link on my previous post. It has maps identifying the gay bars and attractions so you can avoid them, too.
It's not a bad drive to go down to Ocean City for a day and, if you're into birdwatching or nature, you can visit Assateague Island, the home of the wild ponies of Chincoteague. A warning if you go to Assateague, the Chincoteague round-up is held in the last week of July (mid-week). The crowds are heavy during Pony Penning week and the horseflies, mayflies and mosquitos are horrible anytime, so don't forget your insect repellent!
All kidding aside, y'all should have a great time! I wish I lived a bit closer because I miss the boardwalks and arcades of Maryland, Delaware and the Jersey Shore!
