Apropos of nothing, I was talking to a friend of mine about the election.

We may have a half-black president, we might have had our first female president, the walls are coming down.

The conversation then turned to, could we ever have a president who publicly stated no belief in God.

Could people ever be tolerant of a candidate for president who said:

I don't believe in God.

I don't think this country is blessed or righteous, or divinely inspired. I draw no strength from God, I don't pray. etc. etc.
Pretty much the opposite of what everyone else has to say to win.

I would vote for Gmroz.

Give him a chance, Cie. He would soften once in office.;) And remember, there's a difference between being intolerant and simply making fun of people.

Try making fun of a black woman for being a black woman in the workplace if you believe this.

Race is not a choice.

Religion is a hobby that people choose.

That's the only difference I can think of.

I wouldnt ever make fun of a specific person who wasn't my friend to begin with.

Fail to see the connection, as race and religion are very different in my book. I'm voting for Gmroz and that's final. I will of course mock his atheism, as I consider that as much of a religion as any other.

I understand your difficulties with this issue, as Catholicism is a delibitating handicap.

The connection is that intolerance is intolerance no matter what causes you to be so.

OK, so define intolerance....

1. lack of toleration; unwillingness or refusal to tolerate or respect contrary opinions or beliefs, persons of different races or backgrounds, etc.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/intolerance

I don't understand where this conversation has gone. The statement about my observation being that agnostics/aetheists here seem to be the most intolerant (when pertaining to religion - what the article was about)?

Obviously, this forum is all about intolerance, in general. Right intolerant of left. Left intolerant of right. Spytheweb intolerant of everyone. Raymong intolerant of grammar. The list goes on.

My experience as an American is:

1) Tolerance between individuals is pretty good.

2) Intolerance breeds when you spend too much time with people who agree with you.

I think on both counts MadJacks is doing better than average. :00x15

Well I don't see Gmroz beating up Christians or suicide bombing Mormon temples or even suggesting that Hindus be put in jail. So all in all - despite his verbal mockery of religious beliefs and pointing out problems caused by zealots - I would say he is as tolerant of religious people as Weasel is of hippies.

That sort of attitude is NOT going to play well with our friend, weasel.
