Vanden Hurk First '07 Mudcat Summoned To Marlins
04/09/07 - Southern League (SL) Carolina Mudcats

Zebulon, NC --- The Florida Marlins announced that Carolina Mudcats RHP Rick Vanden Hurk has had his contract purchased and will make his major league debut Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers at Dolphin Stadium in Miami, FL.

Vanden Hurk, 22, who was scheduled to make his Double-A debut on Sunday, was held out and rescheduled for Monday night's finale against Birmingham. However he was informed of the Marlins' decision following Carolina's 6-4 defeat at Regions Park.

Vanden Hurk impressed Marlins' first-year manager Fredi Gonzalez when he started one spring training game for the as a non-roster player, working four innings and permitting three runs in a no-decision. Vanden Hurk will become the first Marlin to make his major league debut without pitching a game in Double-A since Logan Kensing was summoned from the Jupiter Hammerheads (Florida State League) on September 10th of 2004 to start a game at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.

RHP James Brauer will replace Vanden Hurk on the Mudcats' roster and start Monday night's finale against Birmingham at 8:05 PM ET.

Carpenter goes on 15-day disabled list
By Joe Strauss
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
04/09/2007

PITTSBURGH -- Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter is suffering from "moderate arthritis" and an impingement of the right elbow that apparently will keep him on the disabled list beyond this month.

The club placed Carpenter on the disabled list today and recalled lefthander Randy Keisler to take his place in the rotation for Tuesday?s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Manager Tony La Russa refused to speculate on the duration of Carpenter?s absence but a release issued by the club said Carpenter "will rest and be re-evaluated in the next 10-14 days."

Carpenter underwent a magnetic resonance imaging Monday and was examined by team medical supervisor Dr. George Paletta. Paletta was not immediately available for comment.

Carpenter returned to St. Louis after experiencing renewed swelling in his right elbow Sunday morning, a day after he successfully completed a side session in Houston. The Cardinals had tentatively scheduled Carpenter to make today?s start until he noted the elbow discomfort.

The Cardinals? release noted "no evidence of an acute ligament injury" and no hint was given that surgery will be prescribed. The release described the impingement as "mild" but did not specify the cause.

"There is going to be no pressure for him to get back before he?s ready," La Russa said. "So whenever he?s ready - next month - I don?t know. I don?t think it?s a fair question to give a good answer to because I don?t know what the answer is. We?re just going to play it by ear and give him whatever he needs."

Keisler, 31, who has seen pieces of action in five major league seasons, worked eight scoreless innings for the Cardinals in spring training before being reassigned to Memphis.
