Depression is a disease, there are genetic predispositions. Have any of you guys ever dealt with it? I did after my dad died. It's debilitating.

well said.....I don`t think I ever watched one of his movies...but I do remember his appearances with johnny carson on the tonight show.....he would go off on a tangent and have johnny laughing hysterically always calling him a genius (while McMahon would sit there and guffaw occasionally but mostly he just looked confused).....

I enjoyed him on carson...carson was so good at what he did...

I sure must not. I've been depressed but not to that degree.

Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.?

Dear Jack- did u ever consider that Robin had his mental problems from the START and that's why he repeatedly sought solice from substances after innumerable trips to rehab? If he was just an addict he wouldn't have killed himself, he could buy enough drugs for 10000 addicts w his money. He was a tortured soul mentally and spiritually, worse than the average guy apparently, and he was self medicating by doing those nasty droogs. ....just my opinion.

I didn't consider anything, I was just running my mouth. :0008

No, I don't understand why people take their own lives. Yeah, it's a sickness alright.

I think that life is a bitch and then you die.......Period. Everyone has there problems, rich, poor, or middle class. Everyone judges, and this is where I think people are wrong. We have not lived others lives and not walked a mile in there shoes. Everyone Points fingers to deflect from there own demons and that makes everyone feel better? The man lived to be 63 years old, and he had his problems......so fucking what?

How about celebrating his life, rather than his demise :0008
He brought Millions of laughs to many, can you say that? :toast:

What can these rich folk be so damn depressed about? I understand that money doesn't make happiness but it can sure help change things. Do what Marlon Brando did and move away to your own island. Something! Those drugs and alcohol sure can fuck you up. Jesus!

Maybe if you were a little more extraordinary, you'd understand better

you may have hit on something here, bud...may not have been your garden variety chemical imbalance induced depression...apparently after 3 plus decades of being an a-list movie star worth uber-millions his career and financial situation weren`t as rosy as we`d think given all his success over the years... divorces..maybe bad financial decisions...he went back to t.v. after 30 years and his new show was cancelled after one year......

must be very hard adjusting to life as a fading celeb accustomed to a certain lifestyle and financial status...

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
I remember CDC published a report last year showing the suicide rate has gone up 28% among these middle aged folk. Mostly at the upper end of the age range - it has soared over 40% while other groups are unchanged - baby boomers are not aging happy and well-adjusted, evidently...The CDC report excerpts:

Suicide deaths have surpassed deaths from motor vehicle crashes in recent years in the United States. In 2010 there were 33,687 deaths from motor vehicle crashes and 38,364 suicides. Suicide rates among middle-aged Americans have risen substantially since 1999, according to a report in today?s CDC journal, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Key findings:

Suicide rates among those 35 to 64 years old increased 28 percent (32 percent for women, 27 percent for men).
The greatest increases in suicide rates were among people aged 50 to 54 years (48 percent) and 55 to 59 years (49 percent).

The suicide rates for those aged 10 to 34 and those aged 65 years and older did not change significantly during this period, the report said.

"The findings in this report suggest it is important for suicide prevention strategies to address the types of stressors that middle-aged Americans might be facing and that can contribute to suicide risk," said Linda C. Degutis, Dr.P.H., M.S.N., director of CDC?s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

Most suicide research and prevention efforts have focused historically on youth and the elderly. This report?s findings suggest that efforts should also address the needs of middle-aged persons.

I mentioned this to the better half and she corrected the record.....I saw "the world according to garp" and the movie he did with walter Matthau((survivors?....both quite a few years ago).....I also remember going to jury duty and being stuck in a room where they had "mrs doubtfire" on and it was an hour that I honestly didn`t enjoy(just not my cup of tea...I tuned it out)....the other two were o.k....

My uncle who is a clinical psychologist has advised me not to comment or react to any type of tragedy until all the facts become available... Over the years, that has proven to be sound advice...In this age of instant gratification where we discover news almost as it happens, it is often difficult to refrain from providing our two cents before we discover the truth....Yesterday, as evidenced by the outpouring of postings on this site as well as others, it is quite evident we lost one the most loved actors of our time...The preliminary cause of death is asphyxiation. however the method remains undetermined....What seems to be a certainty is that the victim suffered from severe mental issues, including but not limited to severe depression...The fact that the latest person to die as a result of this disease is so recognizable in today's society, may place more focus on treating others that suffer on a daily basis with other mental illnesses...What we must not lose sight of is the fact that millions of other average Americans suffer from the same problem, and tragically, those that are afflicted may not always take just their own life, but sometimes the lives of other innocent victims..Many times the use of a gun, knife, or even a car becomes the focus of the outrage and opinions, when more often than not it should be the person that committed the "crime"....People die because of their own actions, not because of the actions of an inanimate object that cannot reason or make responsible decisions....Possibly the death of Robin Williams, will direct the focus away from the crime lab and courtroom and into the hospital, so we as a society can better understand what goes on in the mind of the mentally ill, and see to it that they are cared for in the proper manner....And that my friends is my two cents...
