My uncle who is a clinical psychologist has advised me not to comment or react to any type of tragedy until all the facts become available... Over the years, that has proven to be sound advice...In this age of instant gratification where we discover news almost as it happens, it is often difficult to refrain from providing our two cents before we discover the truth....Yesterday, as evidenced by the outpouring of postings on this site as well as others, it is quite evident we lost one the most loved actors of our time...The preliminary cause of death is asphyxiation. however the method remains undetermined....What seems to be a certainty is that the victim suffered from severe mental issues, including but not limited to severe depression...The fact that the latest person to die as a result of this disease is so recognizable in today's society, may place more focus on treating others that suffer on a daily basis with other mental illnesses...What we must not lose sight of is the fact that millions of other average Americans suffer from the same problem, and tragically, those that are afflicted may not always take just their own life, but sometimes the lives of other innocent victims..Many times the use of a gun, knife, or even a car becomes the focus of the outrage and opinions, when more often than not it should be the person that committed the "crime"....People die because of their own actions, not because of the actions of an inanimate object that cannot reason or make responsible decisions....Possibly the death of Robin Williams, will direct the focus away from the crime lab and courtroom and into the hospital, so we as a society can better understand what goes on in the mind of the mentally ill, and see to it that they are cared for in the proper manner....And that my friends is my two cents...

Good write.

Agree, very good post Handi Capper.
As someone who suffers from depression I understand what that deep dark place is. My father has it too. Only once have I come close to the point of ending it but good thing I didn't. It sucks and it's REAL. Peace everyone, even you Hankieboy.

What can these rich folk be so damn depressed about? I understand that money doesn't make happiness but it can sure help change things. Do what Marlon Brando did and move away to your own island. Something! Those drugs and alcohol sure can fuck you up. Jesus!

All of us have the empty feeling that comes from not being satisfied. It is part of what has propelled the human race to move forward so quickly. However, in someone who is depressed, that empty feeling becomes a wide abyss that it is very hard to resist falling into. No amount of money, drugs, sex or other delights will fill that abyss enough. I am sure it is even harder for someone who is famous and always on the spot whenever he goes out in public. I cannot imagine how exhausting that must have been for him. I mourn the passing of a great entertainer. It is truly rare to have that gift to equally amuse and sadden audiences. He was a captivating performer who for my money was at his best in Dead Poets Society.

Was a little mad at him yesterday due to personal beliefs. But a great guy.

one of my hero's is gone and I can't quite wrap my head around why he gave up.

There are a lot of profound and truly worth reading post within this thread.

Well said thoughts and opinions brought about by the suicide of a man who I hoped had slayed his last demon.

It saddens me...and I don't let much bother me.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...I am Pagliacci.?

yep, it's an old story, does the clown have a Watchman?...David Wong, the Executive Editor of Cracked.com, posted this article that is being re-posted everywhere. Some excerpts:

Robin Williams and Why Funny People Kill Themselves

You ever have that funny friend, the class-clown type, who one day just stopped being funny around you? Did it make you think they were depressed? Because it's far more likely that, in reality, that was the first time they were comfortable enough around you to drop the act.

The ones who kill themselves, well, they're funny right up to the end.

Because Cracked is driven by an army of aspiring comedy writer freelancers, the message boards are full of a certain personality type. And while I don't know what percentage of funny people suffer from depression, from a rough survey of the ones I know and work with, I'd say it's approximately "all of them." So when I hear some naive soul say, "Wow, how could a wacky guy like [insert famous dead comedian here] just [insert method of early self-destruction here]? He was always joking around and having a great time!" my only response is a blank stare.

That's honestly the equivalent of "How can that cow be dead? She had to be healthy, because these hamburgers we made from her are delicious!".......

So I don't know Robin Williams' situation, and I don't need to -- I can go scoop up an armload of examples without leaving my chair. As one of the head guys at Cracked, I'm surrounded by literally hundreds of comedy writers, and I inhabit the body of one.....

Now do you want me to tell you how many messages/comments/emails we get from fans telling a writer to "kill yourself" because said writer wrote a joke they didn't like? When I ban them, they always act confused as to why.....

Yeah, and Chris Farley just made wacky slapstick movies about a fat guy who falls down a lot, right up until he stopped his own heart with a drug cocktail. The medium has nothing to do with it -- comedy, of any sort, is usually a byproduct of a tumor that grows on the human soul.....

As for me, I haven't thought about suicide in a long time, not since high school, when a guy talked me out of it, though to this day I doubt he realizes it. So, I lived on to wind up with a job where one of my tasks is to ban people who follow him from one comment section to another telling him he's not funny and should kill himself. Is that ... irony? Shit, I don't think English has a word for what that is.

Anyway. Rest in peace, Robin. You've given us a chance to talk about this, and to prove that this has nothing to do with life circumstances -- you were rich and accomplished and respected and beloved by friends and family, and in the end it meant jack fucking shit.

I read and listened to your thoughts and comments. All something I personally can learn and grow from. Thank you.
