TAMPA, Fla. ? Republican National Convention officials say Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, will be speaking during prime-time television coverage of the event.

The presumptive Republican nominee said Friday that he was "disappointed" that the networks weren't planning to broadcast more of the convention.

"I know a number of the networks are looking to put money to the bottom line and they might not think that three hours or four hours of broadcasting a convention makes economic sense for them," Romney said. "But this is an important time for our nation."

Romney, in a radio interview on "The Hugh Hewitt Show," said his wife's convention speech is finished. But his speech is "still a work in progress."

Mrs. Romney is a key surrogate in a race where women voters are fiercely sought after by Romney and Democratic President Barack Obama.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, a rising national figure in the party, had offered to give up his slot speaking Thursday for Mrs. Romney, who was scheduled to speak on Monday, the convention's opening night. Broadcast television networks were not planning to cover Monday's proceedings in Tampa.

However, the freshman senator and tea party favorite will keep his Thursday slot, and address the convention in his home state just before Romney closes the convention with his acceptance speech.

Christie is a good orator, I'll give him that. But what he said was typically mean, nasty and hypocritical. So his dad benefitted from the GI Bill and he got assistance for school ? both of those were created by Democrats and opposed by Republicans. So what is his message? Vote Republican and we'll deny you the benefits that my dad and I got?

This wasn't a speech that launches a presidential campaign. It was a speech about holding onto his governor's seat next year, and hoping to become Attorney General instead, so he doesn't have to fight for reelection.

June 10, 1964, was a dramatic day in the United States Senate. For the first time in its history, cloture was invoked on a civil rights bill, ending a record-breaking filibuster by Democrats that had consumed fifty-seven working days. The hero of the hour was minority leader Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen (R-Ill.).
On June 10, 1964, Democrats filibustered the Civil Rights Act.

On this day in 1964, Everett Dirksen (R-IL), the Republican Leader in the U.S. Senate, condemned the Democrats? 57-day filibuster against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Leading the Democrats in their opposition to civil rights for African-Americans was Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV). Byrd, who got into politics as a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan, spoke against the bill for fourteen straight hours. Democrats still call Robert Byrd ?the conscience of the Senate.?
In his speech, Senator Dirksen called on the Democrats to end their filibuster and accept racial equality.​

All told, just over 20 million people were watching last night on the Nielsen-rated networks, compared to 37 million for night two of the RNC in 2008. Night one of the 2012 RNC was roughly on par with night one of the 2008 RNC ratings-wise, making the gap all the more dramatic.
