Williams Says Lawson?s Casino Trip Is No Big Deal
By Nathan Sandals

DETROIT ? Ty Lawson raised some eyebrows on Thursday for his off-court activities in Detroit. Lawson, a North Carolina junior guard, said he had won $250 dollars at one of the downtown casinos here.

On Friday, Lawson said he found it funny how big a story his trip to the casino became.

?It?s not like I go there every day,? Lawson said. ?We were here three days before a game and there was nothing else to do, so I went over there with a couple teammates and just played.?

North Carolina Coach Roy Williams also took exception to the news media uproar, noting that he had gambled in the casino, too. Williams also pointed out that the players who went to the casino were old enough to go and talked with him before they went.

?If we don?t want these kids doing it, don?t put the Final Four in a city where the casino is 500 yards from our front door,? Williams said. ?And they got a great buffet in there. I mean, come on.?

The Tar Heels have a perfect record when Williams gambles and loses, he said. Williams said he lost at craps before North Carolina played Michigan State here in December. The Tar Heels won that game, 98-63.

Coach Jay Wright did not talk to his Villanova team about going to casinos, the junior guard Reggie Redding said.

The issue of casinos near the team hotels and Ford Field has been raised numerous times since Detroit was awarded this year?s Final Four six years ago.

Student athletes are forbidden from betting on any sporting event, but the N.C.A.A. has no jurisdiction over casino gambling. There is a poster in each of the four locker rooms at Ford Field warning players that gambling on sports is illegal. The posters picture an orange jumpsuit hanging in a basketball locker.

I was in the Bellagio in 2000

I stood 4 ft from Shaq at the craps table it was roped off and he was playing with 5k chips. Probably 30-50k a roll. I could not believe how big he was.:mj07:

Back in college (April 2002, I believe) a buddy of mine and I had to stay one extra night for a bachelor party than the rest of the crew. We were both broke college kids and just looked for the cheapest deal, and stayed at the Sam Remo for that Sunday night. As I am standing in line to check in, Mike Ditka gets in line behind me. He actually waited for his turn. We ended up shooting some craps with him. Casino was completely dead, but that table sure got some buzz with people coming over to want to play. He didn't seem to want anything special for him... just walked up to a random craps table and threw some cash down. Saw him later that night getting into the Sam Remo limo. Very odd to see him at such a dive casino, but you gotta think they took care of him.

both Doug and Darren sat in the row in front of me at a Springsteen Concert. I bought them a beer. Doug insisted on buying like the next four or 5. Vin Baker gave me a hundred dollar chip at Foxwoods, he was a pretty generous guy. Was spreading money around pretty good. Probably felt guilty for making millions all those years he didn't even play.

Played craps with Jenna Jameson at the Venetian a few years ago. Once people starting realizing who she was... she had to leave. We played together for about 10 minutes.

Id say my best story would be betting on NFL with John Smoltz at the Nassau Marriott Bahamas jeez 15 or so years ago. I believe he was with the Braves at the time.

You would think a pro baseball player would have a clue about gambling. This guy was betting nothing but 4-5 team parlays. nickel and dime parlays. dont remember him hitting one. He must have done 15-20 parlays that Sunday.

Super nice guy, down to earth. He was by himself when we arrived.
