Ernie Harwell dies at 92

*

Ernie Harwell, the acclaimed Tigers broadcaster whose eloquence and kindness made him a beloved Michigan institution, died tonight after a nearly yearlong bout with cancer. He was 92.

He died in his apartment at Fox Run Village, a retirement center in Novi, with Lulu, his wife of 68 years, at his side. His death came eight months to the day after he revealed to his fans, in an interview with the Free Press, that he had a cancerous tumor in the area of his bile duct and that in late July he had been given only a few months to live.

One of the greatest, if not the best, to ever announce a baseball game. Tigers broadcasts were never the same once Ernie was off the air. I listened to many games on the radio with my grandpa back in the 70's and 80's. My grandpa loved the guy. Ernie was a true gentlemen.

That was a really good post. Cheers! :mj06:

Reminded me and my Grand dad listening to Chuck Thompson of the O's.

In my youth I was a Mel Allen fan. Thought that he was the best that I have ever heard.

I never heard Harwell do baseball, but sometimes when the Tigers were playing the Yanks, Ernie used to sit in with Rizzuto & tell baseball stories in between pitches. It was really great to listen to both of them.

Another piece of true Americana lost forever. He was a guy that you could listen to for hours at a time and never grow tired of.

Very sad indeed. :(

The voice of baseball for any Detroit fan. It was very sad yesterday when the news was broken, everyone pretty much stopped in their tracks. He has been missed on the radio since 2002, he will always be remembered here as Mr Detroit Baseball, the man's voice was amazing. He captured the game like no one.

RIP Ernie:sadwave:
