I learned today that a friend of mine was killed in a car wreck yesterday. My friend was in his car on a 55mph highway when traffic slowed for an upcoming construction zone. The guy that came up from behind never even hit his brakes, and as my friend's car came to a stop, the guy hit him from behind going 60 mph.....i repeat.....never once hitting his brakes. Easy to figure out.....texting. Police confiscated his phone and quickly ascertained that he was texting while driving. Max penalty.....5 years in prison.

Sad day indeed.

Man. That is tough to read. I am sorry for your loss and so silly. I have made it a priority to stop texting or worse yet emailing while driving.

This will only make my goal stronger.

Sorry man.

On the course!
I think, over time, people will find this to be worse than driving drunk.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Bart.

That is very horrible. Florida just passed a law against texting while driving but can be only pulled over in conjunction with another offense and is a $30 fine. Very weak. Penalties need to be much stiffer.
Sorry for your loss.

Sorry man. Seems like a lot of useless deaths lately.

Look around when driving, more than 50% of drivers are on their phones either texting or talking on the damn things. I saw 2 accidents in the city yesterday and I'm sure cell phones were the cause. I had a car coming head on to me the other day on a country road. It wasn't a close call by the time he/she straightened out but I was already making a plan on how to avoid the crash if it didn't.

Sorry for your friend.

Exactly. I drive the Interstate every day and you cant imagine the people I see texting while driving 70 mph. Every time I pass someone and they are texting I blow the horn at them and make them look up to stop texting.

Sorry Bart for your loss.....text messaging is banned in 39 states....only 10 or 11 states have what they call primary laws banning it totally...talking and texting........its the biggest problem on the road and about to catch up with driving and drinking...most states have banned texting for learners permits or intermediate drivers....but once they turn 18 its ok....last year at my high school I had a civil class pretend they were doing a survey in the high school parking lot...as all the juniors and seniors left school at the end of the day...one student was asking the drivers a survey question as the two others were seeing if the drivers was talking on their cell phones or texting.
Of the 150 cars leaving our parking lot over 120 drivers had their cell phones on talking....only a few were texting...and NY has the one of the toughest laws in the country......having been in Texas the last 6 months you can talk on your cell phone except when you enter a school zone...so as you get near the school you hang up...pass the school the zone and then redial and continue talking.. unreal.....the good news is schools are now addressing it and telephone companies are addressing this new crisis. Sorry about your friend...
