Any of you guys have a relatively small safe in your house? Is it worth it?

I know....all safes can be broken into. But I like to keep a little cash around just in case and I've been thinking that having it in a small safe may be better than the typical hiding spots. Between the people who clean our home, my kids, etc- I also thought it would be good to keep some documents safe in a fire-rated safe. I've found a couple that are around 100 lbs, which is helpful for the smash and go robberies which most burglaries fall under.

Here's my disclaimer:

Wife and I just starting out. Don't really have much. I mean it's not like we're eating cat food or anything, but we have one of those ones that's no bigger than a briefcase weighing 35 lbs....

That said, I generally just keep documents in there, new house stuff.

I dunno. If I didn't have it, I don't think I'd be any worse off.

Probably different for your situation.

My uncle is filthy rich, and he has a safe that is a step below a National Bank.

Small safes can put you worse off than having no safe.
Here's why.

You have a 100 pound safe in your closet. Guy breaks into your home while you are out at dinner or something. He goes around the house looking for valuable things and "oh hey wow look at this, a little safe, I bet it is full of valuable things if he needs a safe for them"
And then he picks up that little 100 pound safe and walks out your front door with it (and all the valuables inside in one convenient spot) to open it later.

If you are going to go small, you better have that fucker welded to a 6' x 6' steel plate on the damn floor to keep him from strolling right out with it.

Marine-

Thanks for the feedback. I was looking at models that could be bolted to the floor. Of course, if someone had time + determination it still won't matter.

A contrarian point of view would be that the safe implies there are valuables to be had- ie, vs just insurance policies, etc. I like to keep roughly 5k or so for emergencies and half the places I think about hiding it I'm afraid my wife would throw out inadvertently.

You're better off keeping a single credit card tucked away somewhere with a 10k limit and 5k cash advance available on it then if it is just for emergencies.

Provides much less risk of loss to you instead of keeping 5k in cash in the house.

Simply bolting a safe to the floor won't do much. You might think it's secure drilling a couple of lag bolts down into beams on teh floor, but with the mobility of a battery powered drill and socket wrench, those bolts can be popped out pretty quick. For every hour you spend installing it, it will take someone about 10 minutes to undo.

I can probably point you in the direction of a young man with a shattered jaw that wishes I had something simple like a safe he could have just grabbed and gone rather than taking the time to wander around my house looking for the good stuff to get.

Tear off a 5 inch strip piece of duct tape, stick the credit card to it, and then slap that piece of tape to the bottom of your underwear drawer.

takes no space, easy to do, you know where it is, and unlikely that anyone will find it.

Those of you who play with locals, what do you do with cash winnings? I don't want to deposit it into our banking accounts. If I get audited at some point I'm sure the IRS is going to want to know where that extra 5k or whatever came from.

My brother has a rather large safe that isn't very heavy by itself and it isnt bolted down. He does have it half filled with old barbell plates making it impossible to lift. He keeps it in his basement and I guarantee you, 4 men couldn't lift it, much less jockey it 40 feet across a basement and then up up a flight of steep stairs.

Marine, I love it. Nothing like punks getting what they asked for. That being said I would think something hidden is a good idea, also the weights at the bottom of the safe is a good idea also. It may sound dumb but some moron could see the safe, think you got loads of cash and wait for you to come home to open it. Better off not even letting them know you have one.

I have a floor safe. It's covered by flooring so unless you know what to pull up then you would never know it was there. I love having it.

Buy a safe. Fill it with worthless junk.

Keep your cash in a Pringles can in the cabinet.

Problem solved.
