what does a crown cost you guys? i can't imagine it costs too much, something like 30 bucks? am i close? i just had 6 teeth capped and the bill is $9000. plus i have 6 more to do in the near future until i decide to finish them all off. he told me it's permanent and i won't have to worry about those teeth for the rest of my life. any truth to that because that's why i'm doing this?

thanks

I had a core and a porcelain crown done a few years ago and I thought it ran $1000 ??? My dental insurance paid 1/2.

I remember a bunch of years ago my brother, who had serious financial problems needed a lot of dental work but just didn't have the money. He sought out some dental college that let the advanced student do the work with supervision from the teachers. They did a great job and he saved lots of $$$.

Shop around, I had to do this myself. I found that dentists are worse than used car salesman. A lot of them will try to rob you blind. If you have an outerlying small town in the area it might be a wise idea to bring them the xrays of what you need work on. I saved A LOT of money doing this when I was in the same situation as you a few years back.

getting old i guess. i have that bone problem and had to go to a periodontist (sp?) to have my teeth "deep cleaned" before anything could be done. this supposedly stops the bone from receding more. man, what an uncomfortable thing that was. ugh!

anyway, i think we have a grip on things now.

my advice to you younguns and i was given the same advice in my young years but ignored it. take care of your friggin teeth and get them cleaned regularly or you'll pay out the ass and have some painful things done later in life.

madjack, depending on where u live, that fee is not that high. i used to get 1200/ crown..HOWEVER ! don,t buy that b.s. that you will never have to worry about those teeth for the rest of your life...Delta, on of the largest ins co,s figures the average life of a crown is between 6 and 10 years. that does not mean yours cannot last many more years, BUT, you have to take care of them. that does not mean getting your teeth cleaned a couple of times a year.. hate to break it to you, but, that means FLOSS !!!! if you don,t, everyday, you will fall into that 6 to 10 year range !!! i used to ask my pt,s what condition thier mouths would be in if they did not brush every day ?????? same condition if they did not floss !!! that fact that you had to see a peridontist at your age tells me you have not been in the habit of flossing.....prtect the investment you just made ... every day, period !! next time you have a cleaning ask for some instruction so you are not wasting your time....helpful hint, keep some floss next to the chair you sit in while watching t.v. if you watch something every day, thats when you can floss your teeth......also get in the habit of using round ended toothpicks to clean between your teeth....

i think it was 60 minutes that i saw a story on this place, and it sounded truly amazing. They interviewed dentists from the US, and all but one of them said they had far more sophisticated equipment and better workmanship than anywhere in the US. They also had a guy from Alaska that flies down there for all his dental work that stated even with flight costs, he has saved over 10K on his dental work. I'm still trying to figure out if they do braces, cuz if they do, that's where my kids will be spending a lot of time.

Jack, I like my dentist, but I think she like many like to overtreat. Just because a dentist says you need a crown doesn't mean that you do. I had one crowned 2 years ago and it was 600 bucks (insurance paid half). Yours were 1500 a piece??? Sounds like you bought him some new office furniture, lol!!! Too much money. I broke the outer part of it 3 months later, and it's still broken. The dentist smoothed it out for me, and she said anytime I want, she'll replace at no charge to me (I have that in writing). It was such a horrible experience, however, that I haven't had it done yet. If I ever have to have that kind of work done again, I'm getting sedated in some way first. It kills me to have my mouth open so long. She's told me I need 4 more crowns because I have the huge amalgam ("Silver") fillings, but they're not bothering me, so I'm not getting it done.

also, the periodontist trip was most likely legit. Bet that digging in your gums hurt like heck!

Have one crown I've had for 25 years and no prob and had one that had constant prob with and finally had tooth pulled.

I believe good teeth are due to genetics. My father 82 has all his teeth except one and hasn't been to dentist 5 times in his life--my mother had all her teeth pulled by 50. My brother has never had even one filling--my sister and I have to fight to save every tooth we have. I have partials top and bottom--Would guess about 10 years from now will have all false--and might seem strange but considerings probs yearly will be looking forward to it.--

On a side note Bonding was best dental break through in years--funny thing is --it became inexpensive as more certified--then appears they when back to capping.

Had all my front teeth bonded prob 15years ago--problem I have now is teeth are deteriorating from the inside--

holy chit! went yesterday to get my perm crowns. suspected i would be there 15-30 minutes because they hadn't said and i had 2 crowns years ago and it only took minutes to remove the temp and pop in the perm. when i sat down in the chair the girl handed me the nose cup for the gas. WTF? why? well, the doctor will be drilling the temps off and the teeth under will be sensitive and you will need novacaine. really, how many shots. about 10-15 depending. holy chit, that's the worst part. to cut the story short, i was in the chair for 3.5 hours as he had one hellava time getting the temps off. next month i go back for 4 more (another 6k) plus a root canal ($750) to finish the front 10 teeth i wanted (or was talked into) getting done. i've spent more time in that chair in the last 30 days than my 51 years combined. the gas is nice though. it feels like a 10 beer buzz with no calories :D

$275 - deep cleaning
$9000 - 6 crowns
$650 - "zoom" whitening treatment that ain't worth a chit
$6000 4 more crowns
$750 root canal
total - $16,675 :com:

and i haven't started the bottom teeth yet :scared

i must be crazy!!
