Sands Poker Tournament

There's a million dollar tournament at the Sands Atlantic City this weekend. Today, 192 started -- including just about every big name in poker. The tournament is going to be broadcast for six hours on Thanksgiving Day on Fox Sports Net. Since I am the Media Director for this tournament, I was standing around the main feature table that is used for television.

It was about 11:15 this morning, and I'm gathering up some paperwork when I brush aside some Latino broad. She's standing right there, in my way. I look around her and see that actor Ben Aflack has entered the room and is going to play in the tournament ($10,000 buy in). I'm not into the celebrity craze, but Ben Aflack is is pretty big name, and I've heard he's really into the poker scene, so I was eager to shake his hand and welcome him to the event. Fact is, a star is VERY good for TV ratings and adds to the prestige of the tournament.

Anyways, the Latino broad is standing there, and I'm thinking this is some stargazer (you see where this is headed, right?). Aflack takes a few steps closr and starts talking to the broad, who is standing next to an older Latino woman. Since I am literally inches from the rear of this woman's head, imagine my surprise when Aflack reaches over and hugs the woman.

Then and there, I realize Jennifer Lopez is accompanying Aflack to the tournament and sits right near table-side. With her is, I presume, Lope'z mother.

Lopez is very camera shy and secludes herself in a corner. She makes it clear she does NOT want to be photographed. We respect her wishes, obviously, and all press (except Fox TV) is instructed not to flash pictures of the stars.

Interestingly enough, there was Sands Security with the Sands. But they traveled by themselves for the most part. Had Lopez and her Mother walked the halls and through the casino, I doubt she would have been recognized.

There wasn't much to say about Lopez, because she did not stand out from the crowd in any way. Aflack was dressed "down" so to speak and obviously wants to just be one of the boys. The last thing he wants is to be treated as a celebrity -- from the way he behaves. Again, that's to be respected.

At one point, Aflack was not showing his cards to the hole camera (Fox is using the WSOP method of recording hands) properly. I tapped him on the shoulder after he won a big pot. I asked him if he could show the face cards towards the hole camera. He then reached towards the deck and said "I don't know if I can find them, now." Pretty funny line. Seems like a nice guy.

I'll write some more things about the tournament in next week's reports.

Thanks for sharing that Nolan. I heard he was playing that tourney.. Makes me wish I would have played a couple of sats to try and get in. Truth is I don't like poker at the sands. I played in a Sat there after playing terribly in the $300 no limit event at the us open at the Taj. The guy running the thing had no clue how to run a tourney, and the dealer had never dealt hold'em before.

I just finished Positively Fifth Street and got a kick out of seeing you mentioned in that book. I also play and use PSO.. I know we got off on the wrong foot in here, but i'd love to Pick your brain a little as far as poker is concerned. How long are you staying in town?

sounds fun! Hard to believe she was keeping a low profile and hard to recognize. Were you tempted to pat her on the :moon: ? j/k. Hope it's a great tourney.

***I'll be here through Tuesday afternoon, then back to LV. Give me a call at the Sands if you are nearby and we'll have a drink at the break, if you have time. I'll be in and out of the bar (Copa on second floor) all day tomorrow -- bouncing back and forth between NFL and the tournament. Cell number is 703-786-6038 First round is on me.

***Thanks for the comments. She's not my type at all, though. I'm probably the only man on the planet that doesn't get off on these cum dumpsters (Speers, Lopez, Aguellera). I just tend to prefer a classier woman, that's all. I'm sure Jennifer L. is just in tears about that. :)

I was playing at the Borgatta all day yesterday and it was truly a Who's Who in the tournament poker world that showed up to play in the high limit room there after the Sands tournament. Johnny Chan, Doyle Brunson, Gus Hansen, Allen Cunningham, Annie Duke, Jennifer Harmon, Eric Sidel, Mellissa Hyden and John Juanda just to name a few that I can remember. And not that bathroom habits are usually of interest to anyone, but while washing my hands in the poker room john I noticed a 300 lb linebacker-type, apparently armed, checking out the room. Then as I am strolling out in strolls Ben to take a leak. I mean are there usually a lot of urinal attacks on this guy?

I tell you people in the poker room were really losing their shit over him being there J-Lo sat behind him for most of the time he was in the game with her little entourage. She did seem very quiet and unintrusive, almost as if she was actually taking an interest in the game.

Couple of side notes:

- the Borgata is hands down the best poker room in the city now. There is no contest. The electronic board system is the nuts. A lot of the top dealers at the Taj and Trop left to come over to the Borgata. The comp system for the 5/10 and 10/20 games is $1/hr in comps. I think that is reasonable, I guess, in that a 13 hour day yesterday netted me enough for a couple sandwiches before heading home. Not bad. Brand new comfy chairs. Hot as balls waitresses. There are probably 40 flat panel plasma tvs mounted on the wall and one dealer was saying the rumor is the room will be moved upstairs and doubled in size. I have played poker at the other big rooms in AC and see no reason ever to go back. Oh and the whole bottom floor where the poker room is is non smoking. The other thing I like is the dealers keep their tips, as opposed to having to put them in a big pot and split it, really allows you to reward great dealers for their effort.

- However I find it embarassing I was standing at the desk waiting to be called when Johnny Chan was asking something of the poker room manager, something about getting more $1000 chips because they were out. The guy said to him "OK and your name please?" What kind of self respecting poker room manager doesnt know Johnny Chan? Christ anyone that has seen Rounders would recognize him.

- The high limit players, specifically Harmon and Hyden were creating a SCENE over the fact that people were stopping to watch their game, which at the time was $2000/$4000 hold em. I know a couple of guys who make their living doing this, so no offense to the high limit players, but these are people who have held themselves out VOLUNTARILY as minor quote "celebrities" puting themselves on TV for the betterment of their careers. So they come into the public eye, to a public poker room, with arguable 13 or so of the top 15 players in the world, to play a $2000/$4000 game. What the hell do you expect? If you dont want people watching play in a penthouse suite somewhere play in some back room which I am certain they would find for you if you wanted. Now, I can understand the need for more security, to insure maybe something funny doesnt happen, but Chan and Harmon were chastising the security people and finally would not let anyone even stop to watch the game. I mean, what the fvck is that all about? I understand the need for privacy but completely shutting the public out, the same public that is jacking up your tournament purses and watching you on tv is flat out ridiculous.

- You can learn a lot about these players in terms of their general attitudes just by hanging out by a poker desk for 5 seconds. I had heard in passing from another player that Hayden had quite the attitude about her, which of course I know nothing about and therefore just kind of nodded along. So anyway at some point in time the electronic boards were backed up and were not current. She starts dressing the poor desk guy up one side and down the other, as if he has something to do with the board being screwy. Hes trying to back down and be as nice as possible but she wouldnt let up. At some point her boyfriend came up and got here away, I think Cunningham is her boyfriend, though dont quote me on that.

- Doyle Brunson looks like he is in bad shape. Im not a doctor and I dont play one on TV, but he was on his scooter and just didnt look well. Real sad.

- Jennifer Lopez is, well, pretty hot. Dealers were saying though that Ben used to love going on these long bender card sessions and tip crazy amounts, now he plays more reasonably and those $100,000 tips that were legendary are no longer.

Anyway it was a good day for me as half the folks in the room were paying more attention to who else was there rather than playing their cards. Good times.

ouch!! Spears, Aguilerra, I'll agree with your comment. Lopez, no way is a skank like that. She has a very classy look, and she's around 10 years older than those teenie bopper whores. Please, rethink, Nolan! I'm all about classy older women too, and Lopez fits that bill!

Watched this yesterday afternoon and really enjoyed it. Thought it was odd that ESPN replayed at the same time the WSOP that has already been rerun to death. ANyway, I really enjoyed the Sands tournament.

Just a side note here to say that I disassociated myself with the broadcast, even though I was given a screen credit. The coverage was HORRIFIC. We had so many creative differences that I, in no way, wanted to be a part of that disaster which masqueraded as coverage of a million dollar poker event. I wrote a lengthy critique of the coverage which was sent to Ichan's group. I watched an hour or so of the finale on TV yesterday and was bored to tears. It was an embarassment.

Nolla -

I watched the last couple of hours (have the rest on tape, yet to watch). I didn't think the coverage was so bad given the limited amount of time from tapeing to air.

Granted, I think any poker on TV is good given that for so long we only had the half hour and hour pieces from just the big tournaments on VHS. Those generally only included about 50% of actually poker.

I enjoyed Lederer as he was providing interesting comments on NL and short handed NL play that you don't usually get no matter how informed the commentator.

Jesse was a over the top, but not horrible. Shut Up and Deal is likely my favorite non-educational poker book.

Konick was just kind of there.

Would be interested in some of your criticism.

On an off topic note, I noticed that the players where allowed to wear sponsor hats and clothing, but that a lot of them had tape on the sides of their hats. Was their a limit of one logo/ad per piece of clothing so the side logos were not allowed?

I didn't think the coverage was bad, too many commercial breaks too often, but not bad. It certainly kicked the heck out of that world poker tour bs on the travel channel. That's terrible coverage.

Nolan, is ther any way I can get a copy of all players in the tourney and where they were from? Don't want any private info, just city or country and the players name. Thanks. Or at least point me to a site that may have it.
