District swings from deficit to surplus with newly enacted employee contributions

June 29, 2011

Cost savings from worker contributions to health care and retirement, taking effect today as part of the new collective bargaining laws in Wisconsin, will swing the Kaukauna School District from a $400,000 budget deficit to an estimated $1.5 million surplus, the Post-Crescent in Appleton reports. The district tells the Post-Crescent that it plans to hire teachers and reduce class size.

Soooooo they threw more money at it and fixed it? Now the money came from the hard working middle class. What if it came from the overly rich wouldn't you still have the same result? Except of course the middle class people would have more money in their pockets to put back in the economy.

ssd, is this "swing" due ONLY to those contributions, or was that swing due to other factors in the district? I know many districts are cutting all kinds of things to help their budgets. I don't know, just asking.

And didn't the teacher unions agree to take this step before the agreement was forced upon them? I read plenty that said they agreed with those requests, just not the elimination of collective bargaining. So, I'd say in some ways those teachers should be commended for their stance, although I know in part why they took it.

How much did the health insurance companies contribute to this surplus?

My understanding is that the unions only agreed once the bill was under discussion and word leaked out - and only as a positioning strategy.

For example, in MPS they pushed through a new contract just before Walker was elected, due to fears of this bill.

But now MPS has asked the union to re-open the contact and accept the benefit/pension concessions. Of course, they will NOT do so - so all the "we'll accept the changes" was a bunch of huey, obviously.

The union certainly is not looking out for their members or children - 354 teachers are being laid off. MPS told the union that 200 of those jobs could be saved if they accepted the benefit/pension concessions that most other public workers are getting.

The union effectively said they don't care about those 200 jobs, or the students. Give me the money, they said.

And MPS is one of the worst districts, due to student mix, in the country. Worst performing, that is. 40% truancy rate on a given day. Having less teachers isn't gonna help. But then again, the status quo wasn't working anyway, so why keep wasting the money.

Education funding in America has increased 29% since I believe 1999 (inflation adjusted, so its a true increase), and the results have not matched the increased spending. Not surprising, as most of the money went into teachers benefits, health plans, and union pockets - where it does not good for any student, and just hurts joe lunchbucket taxpayer.

You are right - I support those folks that derive their income from free market economies - not those that have union contracts delivered by the folks they voted in.

I never have had an issue with private unions - but it is absolutely immoral to have them in the public sector, due to the lack of bargaining. Which is what has got us in this situation to begin with.

If the public unions hadn't been greedy pigs for so long, this wouldn't be happening. But the worm always turns. And turn it shall.........

The school district, not the government, has the surplus and will be using some of it to hire more teachers.

I can not see how this is a bad thing and it never ceases to amaze me, that even when confronted by the facts, liberals will spin it.

More jobs leads to more people spending money in the local economy leads to more tax revenue from sales and payroll.

Amazing how it works.

Seriously? Is this the automatic response to everything? The government screwed the middle class?

I'd recommend you take the time to learn about the details of what happened in WI with respect to this and figure out where that surplus money came from, and then where it is going to and I hope you'd be able to figure out the GOOD thing that it was.

Maybe a little history lesson - The Koch brothers father built the Koch empire working, at first secretly, for Joseph Stalin -- to the dismay of the US Government right after WWII. Free markets my ass, the list is quite long of many companies surviving today off the government tit.

The Koch brothers have little intellegence, ask around Wichita. The only reason they haven't squandered their forture is through government help. Things aren't always black and white, as the "free market" of today has no resemblence of 50 years ago.

Huh?

The School District is not a part of government? Are the administrators not paid from local government tax receipts? Are the Members of the board not elected by the people and their salaries and expenses paid from taxes?

KC - I didn't realize that the Koch brothers were unions thugs.

I'm not sure what the relevance of your post is, sorry.

SSD... you didn't list the source of this story. I wonder why?

Report back to us when the Kaukauna School District actually sees that $1.5 million surplus and then actually uses it to hire more teachers to increase the teacher-to-student ratio.

I'll believe that fairy tale when I see it. ;)

Poor Mags... he still believes budget deficits in 45 states were caused by teacher salaries. He's willing to give Wall Street and the power elite a pass because his dogmatic devotion to his party blinds him from the simple truth.

Mags is an anachronism from the 80's. I'll bet he turns up the collar on his Izod shirts and ties his sweaters around his neck... :142smilie

Is the middle class diminishing or just your welfare class expanding (see below for hint)

The middle class will do fine if they are not forced to pack the parasites.

--and your parties answer-
increase spending-raise taxes and--
-add 18 mil illegals (oops "undocumented") to the rolls.

Obama's Labor Union Problem
- Nina Easton, Fortune

On average, nonunion Delta flight attendants take home 12% more than their unionized Northwest counterparts (based on a typical 75-hour-a-month schedule); they enjoy more generous profit-sharing and retirement matches from the company; and they don't have to dole out $43 a month in union dues. (Delta ranked No. 1 among airlines in this year's Fortune Most Admired Companies list).
