I'm going to try to explain to you all why Pac 10 fans love their conference. I'm going to try to have some class about this! In the course, I will have to call on some of your statements, but, please dont take it personal.
The SEC doesn't "have to" schedule powerhouse OOC opponents, unlike USC. Why not?
That's my question too
why not?! Since when is playing tough opponents a sign of weakness! If there is one thing I can bet on every year, it's that the best team in the Pac 10 is going to lose to
somebody in the conference. Even the OOC losses serve a purpose, because in conf play the Pac 10 is full of live dogs who need wins to get bowl bids. The Pac 10 prepares itself by playing tough OOC games!
there have been FOUR DIFFERENT SEC teams win the national championship: Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, and LSU
Since 1992! The national title only means (allegedly!) that you had the best team
that season, not the best conference. When will KU, MSU, Ole Miss, Vandy or S Carolina win that conf.? Never!
On the other hand, since 1991, every Pac 10 team has finished ranked in the top 10 by the coaches and the AP polls. Since 1992, every Pac 10 team (except Cal) has won or shared the conf. title, and only one has gone undefeated in conf play (UCLA '98)! That sounds more like beating up on each other to me. Each of the 5 SEC teams mentioned in the previous paragraph can claim neither of those accomplishments
in the last 12 yrs! Theyr'e not beating up on anybody! You cant separate the top of the SEC from the bottom--they are all in the conf together!
Honestly, the conference has so much talent, that when lsu can go 7-1 in conference, and then beat georgia again in atlanta convincingly, that is pretty remarkable.
I could be wrong, but, I think LSU was the only one of those SEC national title teams that lost a conf game. That would mean that the SEC was averaging an undefeated team every 3 yrs til LSU failed to keep that streak alive. To me, that negates any argument that the SEC beats up on each other. That tells me that the strong are beating up on the weak. And since the weak teams aren't preparing themselves OOC, things wont change.
2 yrs ago, Cal went 1-11 w no conf wins. In that season, the Golden Bears played 4 different D1 conf championship teams. The next season, buoyed by the tough schedule from the previous season, they win a game @ Mich St & begin to turn around their program. This yr they beat the best team in the country w a 1st yr starting QB & manage to win a bowl game. Read into that what you will.
A season of ticket sales in the SEC will easily DOUBLE that of the Pac10. How is that possible with such lousy opponents in and out of conference?
Well, people used to flock to watch Christians being thrown to the lions. Other people used to flock to watch Black people being burned at the stake & dragged through the streets. I suspect those are the type of people who enjoy watching SEC teams play the Citadel, LA-Monroe, FAMU, Mid Tenn, Troy St, UCF & App St.
And I didnt know they played football in the stands. What do the ticket sales prove?
In my opinion the SEC has some great programs at the top, but the entire conference is not really tough. Pac 10 fans can look forward to upsets. The fans of Oregon St have just as much hope for a conference title next yr as the fans of Oregon. Cal will have some hope of their first conference title in I dont know how long. Those things dont really exist for the majority of SEC teams.
