Well, last week absolutely sucked, other than Awbarn and UcheaT losing of course! 1-4-1 was the record and it wasn't even that close!
Happy days are here again though.... my CrimsonTide comes off their first of two bye weeks to take on Reverend Nutt and his Ole Miss Rebels. Should be the matchup of the weekend in the SEC.
On to the plays....
Vandy at Jawga
Well, some things never change I suppose. All Vandy had to do was go into Starkpatch last weekend and beat a below average Bulldog team to become bowl eligible. The 'Dores returned to their former ways losing to MSU 17-14. They were held to 109 yards of total offense and only converted on 1 of 9 third down attempts. The key to this game was turnovers. Vandy had 2 and MSU had 0. That has been the "X" factor for Vandy all year. When they win the turnover battle, they win the game, plain and simple.
Meanwhile, UGA returned to action for the first time since their asswhipping by Alabama. Mark Richt and his 'Dawgs took Phat Phil and the Viles out behind the woodshed 26-14 in Athens. The score does not reflect UGA's dominance... they gained 458 yards on 81 plays, held Tennessee to 209 yards on 45 plays and had a 29-10 advantage in first downs. UGA had the ball for a whopping 42+ minutes of possession as well.
So what does this mean? Absolutely nothing I suppose. Vandy won the last time in Athens (24-22) and lost by a FG in 2007 (20-17). Of course, that win in 2006 is the only one by the 'Dores in the past 14 years.
Let's talk about offense... or lack there of when it's Vandy's offense. The 'Dores rank 116th out of 119 teams in passing offense with 90.3 yards per game, and 117th in total offense at 250.2 yards per game. QB Mackenzi Adams will start in place of Chris Nickson this weekend. Vandy coach Steve Martin... I mean Bobby Johnson pulled Nickson in last Saturday's loss after he threw an interception in the fourth quarter. The 'Dores failed to get a first down in the first and third quarters and finished with 107 yards of offense. Nickson completed just three of his 10 passes for 15 yards, and he hasn't thrown for more than 91 yards or completed more than nine passes in a game this season. YIKES!!!! UGAa ranks fourth in the nation in rushing defense, giving up 52.2 yards per game. The 'Dawgs, however, are 82nd in pass defense and surrender nearly 222 passing yards per game.
UGA QB Matthew Stafford is 22-5 as a starter. He registered career-high 25 completions and 310 yards passing last week. He has thrown for 5,775 yards with 34 TDs and 26 INTs in his 'Dawg career. Knowshon Moreno is tied for 12th in the nation in scoring with 60 points. Mohamed Massaquoi recorded a season-high 103 receiving yards and one TD on five catches against the Vols. Furthermore, Moreno rushed for 101 yards, his third 100-yard performance of the season.
The 'Dawgs O-line could start three freshmen against Vandy - center Ben Jones, guard Cordy Glenn and right tackle Justin Anderson. Vince Vance will miss the rest of the season and needs reconstructive surgery after hurting his knee in the second quarter. UGA lost projected starting left tackle Trinton Sturdivant to a season-ending knee injury before the opening game. Sophomore guard Clint Boling replaced Vance against UcheaT, and Head 'Dawg Mark Richt said sophomore Kiante Tripp, who had started the first three games at left tackle before moving to tight end, will return to playing tackle.
Vandy LB Patrick Benoist, safety Ryan Hamilton, CB Myron Lewis, CB D.J. Moore and LB Chris Marve rank among the conference defensive leaders. Benoist ranks second in the SEC with 59 total tackles and fifth with 29 solo tackles. Hamilton is tied for eighth with 45 tackles and tied for second with three INTs. Lewis is fifth with three QB sacks, eighth in INTs and 10th in passes defensed. Moore ranks fourth with six defended passes. Marve has been one of the league's top defensive newcomers, ranking 10th with 44 total tackles.
The last two years this game has come down to the foot of the placekicker. Vandy's Bryant Hahnfeldt is 7-of-9 in FGs, including three beyond 40 yards. He is also 16 of 16 on PATs. 'Dawg PK Blair Walsh scored a career high 14 points on four field goals (34, 20, 41, and 28 yards) and two PATs against UT. He has made 10 of his first 12 kicks. His two misses have come from 52 and 54 yards.
Vandy definitely will get to 7 wins this season. Unfortunately for them it won't get #6 this week. Jawga is too deep and talented to allow another Vandy upset in Athens. BUT.... the 'Dores are not a bad ball club. They will keep this game closer than the UGA faithful want. SHOW YOUR GOLD!
Trends for this game:
Commodores are 4-0 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
Commodores are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
Commodores are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 conference games.
Road team is 9-4 ATS in their last 13 meetings.
My prediction is UGA 24-13
My bet is Vandy +14.5
