It might be a good idea for you to take the course with him. If you're going to be going out with him while he is using this firearm, you really need to know whats going on to. No room for mistakes when dealing with guns.
You better plan on acting fast if you want to find some .22 ammo. If you find some, you're more than likely going to be limited on how much you can get.
To help you sleep better tonight, I would have typed the exact same reply regardless of who the author of this thread was. It isn't about what I may or may not think about you (quite honestly, I really don't have an opinion either way on you as I don't know you), this is about someone giving their child a weapon and introducing it into your home and not knowing much at all about it.

someone asking for shotgun ammo + it's for a .22 + it's for their son = it doesn't take a real bright guy to figure out what this is a recipe for.

And sports.. wrong. You took a test to learn how to drive before you got to own and drive a car didn't you? Or did you just inherit if down the chain and no one took the time to instruct you in how to safely operate it before you jumped behind the wheel and peeled out the driveway?

Well here's a tip, do it before you go buying ammo for it and putting matches next to gasoline.
