we were toast when we went to the regionals...all fenced in fields....

the state tourney was mostly on open fields...except when you got to the semi-finals...then they played at utz--twardowicz over at patterson park...

but even the best in the maryland states weren`t big farm boys like we saw vs york....

they scored like a pinball machine...scary stuff...

little probably being around 6`2" and 220?....:grins: ...some of these monsters are ...well,monsters....

when i played york barbell was the regional power...they really needed to have their dna checked...

Oh yes, Steele's and Ritch's Superior were the best two Major teams back in the day when I was a kid. Those guys were mammoths.

Garden, there were 3 of us that the rest of the team called little shits as in around 5'10 185. Somebody had to play defense for us that could run, ha. (the rest of them were what us three called fat fu.ks. we had a lot of big guys but not like the Major level players) Although our 2nd baseman looked like a bowling ball, and our catcher was enormous.

where do them big guys get the home run power from ?

is it just their weight making full contact ?

is it just strong wrists and arms

or just the fat belly

i hear you bro...you had some of that beef on your team....we were the sacrificial lambs....

we had two ex minor leaguers on the team...but,truthfully,they weren`t great slow-pitch players...

all of the above definitely help. but IMO the two biggest factors are bat speed#1 and using your whole body, especially your legs. but what do I know I am not what you would call a HR hitter. All the "big name" players have the hottest bats on the market. It makes a HUGE difference

I only hit two home runs ever and they were inside the park. On one there was a girl in right field and I dont really count that one.

So when you say hot bat, they are filled with cork ? Or filled with lead ?

Isnt that cheating ?

Putting roids in you're bat ?

It was all fast pitch for me. Played till age 41. Total 25 years from 1956 till 1982. Slow pitch 12 inch started around here about 77 to late for me. We had what was called pumpkin ball witch was a 16 inch ball and was also called beer ball. A fast game of slow pitch. Very big in Chicago area and Wis.
I tried 12 inch slow pitch was not very good. Hit long foul balls that were just outs. I was just to uses to fast pitch and was way ahead of the ball. In fast pitch I even had the chance to play against The King and His Court twice. Dam guy Eddie Fanger the pitcher struck me out once from second base. I was blessed with decent speed and pitch in over 2100 games.

saw Eddie Feigner pitch 2-3 times in my young days....that guy made big league players look silly and him and the other 3 guys beat team full of 9 players every night....and it was not setup like the Globetrotters...

Eddie had fast ball close to 110. Try hitting that in 46 feet. Baseball you get 60 feet to re-act. I'm humbel to say I got a base hit off him.

Your closer to right then wrong. You had to guess some and hunch swing. In two games I went 1/4. WE lost one game in 65 3/0. In 67 our all star team had a bunch of dam good fast pitch players and we tied 2/2. We thought that dam near a win.

Played both slow and fast pitch and wouldn't trade the experiences and friendships for anything, also umpired a lot on all levels. Boy, did those bats change the game. Turned a game of speed and defense into home runs. Hell, when I started playing slow pitch, we had one wooden bat and would borrow the other team aluminum and beat them. LOL Also remember using A Denny McClain model Wilson glove when I first started playing fast pitch and the old timers were amazed how big it was (normal by today's standards). Often they'd tell me "I like to know I have the ball when i catch it." I'd reply, "I just want to catch it. I'll find it in there sooner or later"
For all of you old fast pitch players from small towns, I bet you remember playing before crowds of 100 to 200 people for just an average weeknite game. Hell, we only had 2-3 TV channels then so what else was there to do? Now you can have the best slow pitch teams in the area and have a hard time having wives and girlfriends show up. Boy, those were the days.
