My family owns a real nice stocked private pond. The fishing is out of this world. Over the years, my father would always tell me they were bad for the pond and would get them out of there anytime he came across one. Since he passed, the only person I really take with me back there to fish is my father in law. We came across one this week, a big sob trying to eat the bass we had on the stringer. He snaged it out of there and I figured we were gonna kill it. He said it would ruin the ecosystem and he threw it back in? I've always felt you should never kill any type of animal unless your'e gonna eat it, but snapers are bad news....

Any pond owners out there? What would you have done?

Thanks in advance

My own personal opinion Mully but let mother
nature take care of herself. You have no idea
what the upside of that "snapper" is. And I'm
not trying to be funny, although it's killing me
not to.

Your Father is absolutely correct. None of the marine or freshwater turtles are good or provide any thing at all positive for a private pond. They are definitely a negative influence on such a small ecosystem that is a private pond. They will multiply rather quickly, live to an old age and will eat all the baitfish and sunfish that is necessary to support the black bass population. They will also destroy plant life in some cases and will eat all fry and fingerlings. I would suggest that you trap and kill them all. There are several different websites that can give you tips about fishery management. Personally, I would look towards the TPWD or even bassmaster dot com that have several articles that will help you develop and keep up a great fishery.

Trust me when I tell you every turtle I have ever caught in a fishery has been removed!!!.

One of the best fisheries in the world Lake Fork, encourages shoreline residents to shoot remove them if possible and will pick them up for free. We just sit on the porch with a few Miller Lites and a .22 and pick em off when the stick their little heads up then watch the destructive fuhkers sink to the bottom and let the damn crawfish eat them, which is another thing that turtles will absolutely demolish. Once removed you may consider entering some crayfish into the fishery as they are very cheap and will really give a boost to your growth rate and such and really provide the owner with not only another food source but will help stabilize the pH level and mineral levels in your pond.

Hope this helps,
FDC

I heard they are good to eat. Up in the Rockford Highlands, very near were BBC resides, they catch them and eat them quite regularly. It's just a chunk of muscle I suppose. And I don't think they are bottom feeders. You just got to get a good recipe. Who knows, you may get rid of the fish and stock up with turtles.

This is eerily similar to my posting style here at Madjacks.

i actually had one of those fkers in my yard about 2 years ago. the shell was about 2 feet diameter. my wife called her father, cause he likes eating different things. he came over, got my broom, held it to the turtle's mouth, the turtle bit it and hung on. he took it to his trunk, took it home, killed the ****er, cleaned it and made turtle soup.

i never tried it :mj07:

You remember Kinko (Dale) that I ran my poker game with? Done playing GOlf one day and headed home and he jumps out of my moving car and grabs a turtle and throws it in my trunk to eat. Nothing like Redneck friends.
