and was waiting for my to go order for dinner at 5:30 tonight, waiting at the bar. Only one other person, tall African American gentleman, probably in his late 40's/50 sitting there as well, drinking a martini, no one else. We are talking about a lot of different things, life, watching US OPEN that was on, playing tennis at our age, golf, his son, my kids. Really nice guy. From Cleveland now but said he spent a lot of time in Chicago. He is in ATL to watch his son's football game tomorrow night somewhere. My salads order comes out, I pay, and he stands up, we shake hands, and both say thanks for the nice conversation. "Enjoy your stay here". He says, "Safe travels home".

I get in the parking lot and the Valet kid says, "was he pretty cool to talk to?" I say, "why do you ask?"

He says, "that was Charles Oakley who used to play with Michael Jordan you were talking to." I then think and realize, damn, that was Charles Oakley behind the short hair and graying beard. Had no idea, and he did not lead on that he was anyone. Just a regular person, chilling out by himself. Just thought I'd share.

One of my favorite players of all time. Good to hear that he is classy.

He was rodman without the tats, piercings, kicking, and the rest of the attention whoring. Seemed like a hard nosed pro's pro.

That's a cool story. I'm quite sure at this point in his life he is very happy that Jordan stole the "spotlight" and he isn't very recognizable in public. He probably likes going out for dinner without a flock of people bothering him.
It's a good thing you didn't challenge him to a little one on one to pick up the dinner tab too! :142smilie

I would have never recognized him either unless he was shoving someone in the back.

That is the only Charles Oakley that I know.

Wow, only 2 people at the bar at Houstons Buckhead. I heard it has gone downhill. When I lived there, there would be 1000 folks at the bar. Sorry to hear.

Guess $50 steaks and $5 beers have gone out of style a bit in the last few years:shrug:

Just a follow-up. It was pretty weird that Houston's was empty at the bar but very true. There were a few people in booths around the bar area, but just he and I at the bar on a corner. Granted, it was just after 5 and I was leaving my office there in Buckhead.

Jack, valet was free for take out, I'm not that much of an uppity up. :142smilie

.................................................................

kosar

your losing your touch

I was ok with whinerguys story until this part came out.

Whinerguy talks to charles oakley a 7 ft tall basketball player and never asks what he does for work ?

got to call bs on that

Then the valet saying this is just too unbelieveable but it does enhance the celebrity so I guess thats why it was included.

The valet ppl are trained to keep their mouths shut. They dont rat out Oakleys to some boreguard with a take out dinner and beer on his breath by breathing out a .....

Do you know who that was .......

wow oh wow the kid must have wet his pants just being near whinerguy for talking to the Oak

 :SIB
