ok heres the scenario:

my MIL is 62 1/2 and me and the wife are thinking she has worked approximately 6 months in her life. Now those 6 months we do not know if she contributed to SS taxes. So I have 2 questions.

1-If she contributed to SS during those 6 months can she collect SS?

2-If she didn't contribute to SS during those 6 months can she collect SS?

ageecee....In a month I can collect...the big question is do i want too....at 62 I would get a pretty good amount...if I wait 4 years I get another $500 per month...I'm getting hit with both sides..." take it now because it will take8 or 9 yrs to catch up to get even...put the current money in some kind of earnings,etc...the other side says..wait the 4 if you don't need it now....if I take it now I will be taxed 20% of it...damn.. I didn't even know they can tax ss...my retirement money put me in a higher tax bracket...my wife wants me not to take it and she will apply next year...confused...going to talk to my finance guy and see what he says....not sure of your answers but just apply on-line..fill out the form...they give you an ID number...ss will tell you what your wife contributed and if she gets anything.I filled it all out but didn't hit submit..you can exit the application and put in on hold...
Should take it the money now..put it on the Pacers to win the series vs the Knicks...damn..don't have to worry about the next 4 years..:mj07: good luck.

Thanks Box but me and wife are trying to find out if my MIL is eligible to even receive benefits.

I have my account online so I know what my benefits are.

If you don't contribute to SS is there a way you can collect SS? Hell I don't know that's why im asking.

you can call first thing in the morning and get thru to the folks who will answer all your questions..

have it set on speed dial and start hitting the button a 30 seconds to opening time in your time zone..

they were extremely nice..

Ok looks like she cant collect SS. You have to have 40 credits to be eligible.

For every $1100 you contribute to SS you earn one credit.

i might be getting this mixed up with soc sec disability but i think she needs a certain number of quarters of coverage to qualify(within a certain time frame)....the amount will probably differ based on which year(s) she worked......don`t remember what the amounts per qtr are but i`m pretty sure that 6 months won`t get it......

don`t take this as gospel because it`s been a long time.......but i`m pretty sure she needs more time in the workforce to qualify....

i`d call the teleservice center to make sure i`m getting good info....1-800-772-1213

And from what I've heard a wife (co-worker) whose benefit is less than half than her living husband can file under his and receive a greater amount.

On the course!
I know a guy who collects SSI. Never worked a day in his life, and has been getting a check for 20+ years!

Fucking bum.

If this is the case jack is right. If she is remarried or divorced and her spouse is still living she should still be eligible. I deal with lots of clients who are on ssi and i think if she has never worked she should be eligible for around $710. per month

She hasn't worked in 40 yrs yet last year she tried to get disability. Me and wife figured since shes 62 she might try and get SS.

Shes remarried and hubby is working. My wifes dad died when my wife was 2 yrs old and she got his SS benefits till she was 18 I believe. She remarried but like I said earlier shes worked 6 months her whole life.
