As one who was there last night
I echo the sentiment of playing the game out...
What bothers me even more was the fact of when they announced that the game would end... 1 out in the bottom of the 11th is when they made the announcement... basically, "NL you must score in this half inning or the game is over".... while the national TV audience knew about this for quite a while...
I do disagree with you folks regarding Bud Selig - and I am not a biased Selig lover.. you could tell that he was beside himself and wanted to keep playing (based on his body language - throwing his hands in the air)... but Brenly and Torre were adamant about not playing..... Torre kissing a** to Garcia and Pinella in Seattle, as he knows he will have to probably face them in the playoffs, and didn't want them upset... even tho Garcia said he could have gone a few more innings....
Baseball has got a lot of things wrong with it - but I guess my view is that Selig is trying to right some of the wrongs - whether he will be successful, I don't know. He should have put his foot down last night and said "Men, we are finishing this".... that was a tragic mistake he made. But I do believe he is our best chance at leveling the playing field to some degree, so that all baseball fans can have hope at the beginning of the season, and not just Yankee fans - who not only have hope, but have the expectation of winning the world series every year....
Football is the only sport that has it right - no "guaranteed" contracts - to get your money, you have to perform - and has a salary cap - if there was any sport in my opinion that deserves guaranteed money, it would be football with the injury risk...
Hoops is a mess, but at least with the cap, teams have a chance (even small market Sacramento gave the Lakers a good run)...the only thing in hoops is that there is no human counterpart to Shaq...
Baseball needs radical change now. I wouldn't mind the owners locking out the players for a year or more to get the point accross - but every year, fans of Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, etc are saying "let's get 'em next year" by May 15th....
It's hard to be a fan anymore...
