Honestly not a whole lot on that list that surprised me. Mark Wahlberg, Hugh Jackman, John Travolta, and Andy Garcia? I like all those guys in almost everything they're in but come on - never once have I watched any of them and thought "wow, they should get an Oscar for this."
Leo was probably the most surprising to me - just because I would have sworn that he did win one. 0 for 5 is rough.
Edward Norton and Richard Burton are probably the most deserving on that list, IMO.
As Snaf mentioned, Hitchcock never got one. That's just a travesty. Kurosawa never got one either. Although both did at least get honorary ones.
Scorsese finally got his in 2007 after being 0 for 6. Ironic because I don't think I'd even put The Departed among his 10 best films.
Pacino also won one after going 0 for 6, although I bet you 90% of people couldn't tell you what film he got it for without looking it up. Wasn't The Godfather, Serpico, or Dog Day Afternoon . . .
Nah, most on that list don't surprise me either and I like them as well, just don't think they have been Oscar worthy. A few I think should have won or certainly will eventually are Julianne Moore, Leonardo, Joaquin, Ed Harris, Robert Downey Jr and John Malkovich.
Al Pacino - Gonna guess he won for And Justice For All?
I just looked. Not surprising, I liked his performance in that one as well. If you look at his nominations you would think that he was snubbed but he hasn't really had that active of a career. He only made 5 movies in the 80's after a busy 70's. The 90's picked back up but since then it's like maybe one every 18 months. I was surprised. But, I guess being nominated 8 times is good but I thought a lot more off the top off my head.
So then I checked De Niro to compare, and see that he has probably made 3 times as many movies (I didn't count them) and nominated only 7 times. That surprised me as well. I guess I give those two guys way extra credit.
Wow, since 1991 Deniro and Pacino have only been nominated 3 times all together. That surprised me too. Pacino not nominated since 1993. Talk about a dry spell.
Anyway, I'm rambling. It was interesting to look at at 2-3am in the morning. :0003
